Became a US military rifle, the design of the stock allowing straight back recoil, the buffer in the stock, the light weight, the low recoil on full auto and ability to fire full auto at a target without muzzle climb , plus the extra amount of ammo vs the 7.62 Nato that GI's and Marines could carry pound for pound was all part of the reason.
Let her try that with a M-14 7.62 on full auto.. LOL The muzzle will go straight up after 5 rounds..
But many back then, older wise, combat experienced Sgts, wanted to keep the 7.62 for the penetration of the round, the long range , the ability to hit out to 1000 yards.
