remember when everyone smoked?

I’m watching All the President’s Men (1976) and Dustin Hoffman is lighting up cigarettes without thought and unapologetically all over the place. No one gives it a second thought. He even makes it look good.

Remember when everyone had ashtrays in their home; sometimes on every table? Remember in the workplace, there were ashtrays on every desk and there was always someone smoking at any given time?

If a society can make such a change as it has with cigarettes, anything is possible.

Yes, you're right. Someday America will come to it's senses and outlaw guns. Spare me your misunderstanding of the second amendment, guntards.

Thanks for the Constitutional lecture, genius. I'll stick with the Supreme Court's interpretation of the second amendment. If they change that, feel free to post something intelligent.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled program:

Also, people smoked cigars regularly during the day (now they are kind of almost ceremonial or celebratory, or when you are doing something like golf).

I was watching a documentary on the killing of JFK, and they showed a bunch of cops/news men/whoever milling around the hallway of the jail where Lee Harvey was...and a bunch of the cops, wearing cowboy hats were walking around with cigars stuck in their mouths...

Could you imagine that today? It would be like "man, what the f*** are you doing?"

I was driving home last night and the fucktard in front of me was toking on something that smelled like he must of been burning his queer boyfriend's underwear. Besides the repugnant odor emanating from the fudgemobile, he was driving under the speed limit, which was causing a back-up. I guess he's used to douching out his back-up's to clear the way for receiving manmeat, so he didn't think anything of it. Just to prove that he and the rotten walnut-breath passenger knew that they were impeding progress ~ they both were waving out of their moon roof as if to say; "look at the stretch marks left by all of the cocks we sucked today from our glory hole!"

When the two semen eaters went to the Doctor the last time he asked them if they smoked after having sex. They told him yes and the Doc replied to use lubrication next time!

If you watch some old clips of "The Merv Griffin Show" or "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson", you will see the host and guests smoking.

Chesterfields aided the digestion. Back when the innards of people looked like plumbing in their advertisements. And some old Crank "Calling For Phillip Morris" Saving up cig coupons for junk in some store. Oh and the Cigarette Girls with their trays at the ball games. Though I only went to one, SF Giants and saw Willie Mays play from the bleachers in 62 and was way young to smoke though I had tried it by age 8.

One thing that was a suck in to me was all the different colors on the packs, the way they looked in the racks. I wanted to try them all! Started with Pall Mall Red, Then Luckys and Camel humps non filtered, tried some Chesterfields, they were regular length like a Pall Mall and were very strong. Then Went to Marlboro , Winston Lites , then some other Lites then finally gave it all up in 91. Too shook up over "Scud Sissile Attacks" nerves shot..LOL When I finally quit it was a breeze. Weird, after I had tried 1000 times a day or two or three at a time, then 2 years quit, then smoke only at night then Gone ..Now Forever ! Never Give up Giving Em Up. That said I am not a former smoking "Nazi" like so many become. Smokers don't bug me. DAJAX

Sweet! Sounds like you have that 'understanding' already! So let's put this plan into action. I have guns, you want to take my guns. I will gladly give up my guns if YOU personally were to come to my house and attempt to take them. Just you, no one else. Apparently you are the only one who has come to his senses, so I would suggest you do the sensible thing yourself :D

Where I went to Jr High in 1977, there was a smoking area for the students. Nothing funnier than seeing a 14yr old student smoking next to their teacher.

and it wasn't that long ago. It was 1990 or 91 and I was in my late 20s when I walked up the stairs one day to my office instead of taking the elevator. It was the weirdest thing - there was an adult smoking in the stairwell. I hadn't seen anything like that before. To me he looked like he thought he was a teenager. It was weird. I've never forgotten that. A strange sensation - experiencing a cosmic shift occurring.

Why, yes, Sonny. I remember the time when there smoking break rooms in office buildings. I also remember when there was a smoking courtyard at Lake Braddock Secondary School. I remember going to smokey bars and parties and bumming cigarettes from other people and having people bum cigarettes off of me.

I also remember when smoking policies changed and we had to start going outside to smoke - if you were lucky you had a covered smoking area with ashtrays and benches to hang out on. If you were not so lucky you stood outside by one of those ashtray stands, no seat, no shelter...

I don't smoke now. Haven't for a long time.

Anyone remember going the DMV to do tag/title work back in the 60's and 70's before the "Number System" that is in place today?

The long rope lines - Dozens of people standing for hours - Chain smoking.

Ashtrays all overflowing with cigarette butts, and a blue pall in the air.

I wonder how many DMV clerks died if second hand smoke? It was worse than a concert at The Cap Centre.

it was before my time, before yours

i know you don't remember it

when i was young the quitting craze had begun (doctors knew it caused cancer) and no smoking signs were going in some places

when i was a teen democrats had banned smoking from H.S. which used to have ashtrays for smokers in the courtyards (on school grounds, for smoking in-between classes, and yes there WAS more time in-between classes - unlike today's prison style "walk fast to class or we call the police" governments)

They changed it for the first time in 2008, but the jabbering of the revisionist Scalia was so pointless and nonsensical as to make it a certainty that it will be changed again.

Nowadays, whenever I get into a discussion about smoking with a smoker, I simply thank them--all that money they throw away on their habit comes back to retirees like me in the form of dividends, which help pay for all our bills. So everyone has a purpose, no matter how we nonsmokers get judgemental about it, their money thrown away is going to turn out to be someone else's blessing.

They are fools if they pick that expensive habit. It was bad enough when cigs were dirt cheap and a pack of generics could be had for under a buck if you were really jonesing for one.

Now these Millennials "Vape". Whatever. I am so glad not to be dealing with that either.

Guns - yes, that is a right. And we need to learn not to hand our rights over like sheep.

In 1971 Cigs were .25 cents a pack, 2.50 a carton.. They were about .30 cents a pack at 7-11. My father was US Navy. Cheap cigs, always hot Navy coffee pot 24/7 , real butter, eggs, red meat on the ships , Good Navy Food..but high in salt and fat and cholesterol. No wonder he died at 58..As many others did..

I sold loosies in Jr High, ca 1974. Paid .50 per pack, sold them for .05 each, 2-3 packs per day. It made me relatively rich, and quite popular. We had a smoking area too, but the bathrooms were the preferred smoke break place.
