Moved here from Vermont
Posted by: Patent djd ()

I'm a newcomer to the area, and my eight-year-old is sometimes asked over for playdates with his new friends, which is great - except that last week he informed me that a friend's teenage son had showed them the parents' (unloaded) revolver. Yikes.

It's never occurred to me to ask other parents whether they keep guns around - we moved here from a country where basically only hunters and farmers have them.

Is this something you ask parents of new friends, before you permit an unsupervised playdate?

Please no gun rights/gun bans arguing; I just want to know if the question is considered OK or impolite. Thanks!

That's really bizarre.

That will never happen again - very strange!

I would make certain the parents are aware. I have never heard of anything like that around here.

Maybe, you should be more concerned about asking the friend's family what kinds of meds the child is taking.

When did Vermont become a 'country'?

On the chance this isn't a troll post:

If you think that guns are the only dangerous thing lurking in your neighbors' homes, you are living in a dream world. Yes many people around here have "personal protection" firearms as well as hunting weapons. (I suspect the same was also true where you were from. YOU just were not aware of it.) In addition we have knives, power tools, medicine cabinets full of more drugs than a patent medicine salesman's wagon, alcohol, peanuts, glutten, dairy products, refined sugar in various forms plus questionable movies and this "interweb thingie". Are you going to be asking the parents about all of these things? If you are you are likely to be labeled that difficult overprotective parent. If not then perhaps you need to admit you are gun phobic.

Most responsible gun owners would agree that a child showing a visiting kid the household gun s ordinarily unacceptable. THAT should be your primary concern. Your kid was around someone who showed poor judgment. In the future perhaps this child should do playdates at your house.

"We moved here from a country"? Vermont is a country now? I didn't know that.

You must not know very many people in Vermont either. They have one of the highest gun ownership rates in the country.

No conceal/carry permits required. They believe the 2nd Amendment is your right to carry concealed.

You can ask any question you desire here in Virginia - As long as you let them put $1.25 on your Smart Pass account.

Make sure your account is valid and up to date, as you don't want the fascists at Transurban after you.

Next time you troll like this, pick a state with tight gun control laws. Vermont, while quite liberal, has extremely lax gun control laws. The state doesn't even require a permit for concealed carry.

Welcome to Virginny, bubbee.

We created the 2nd Amendment. Give me liberty, or give me the bullet.
