Time To Protect Students In NOVA Schools and Colleges
Date: October 02, 2015 12:19PM

From The Washington Post article today about the killings at the Community College in Oregon

"he methodically sprayed bullets into classrooms full of students, who hid behind desks and desperately tried to block doors that didn’t lock."

Door that did not lock? At Va Tech the professors were afraid to open the doors to lock them as they lock from the outside with a key.

See the thread about the Mclean gun shop and see what I had said about this with regard to school locks several days ago. And the part about fire codes need to be changed as a double deadbolt would work also.

In doing some research it seems that The County of Fairfax requires a "Classroom Intruder" lockset on child care class rooms and any classrooms for young students in their Guidelines for Architects with specifications to build new buildings or remodel new Fairfax County Govt. buildings. They are ahead on child classroom security as the Fairfax County Schools does not have this requirement.

From Section 08000
8. School Classroom , Child Day Care Centers
Classroom intruder lockset- Always free to exit, locks only by key from inside the classroom, door does not need to be opened to lock from outside as a regular classroom lock.

This "Classroom Intruder" lock allows a teacher to lock the classroom door with their key while the door is closed and they don't have to open the door if something dangerous starts to happen. The inside door handle is always free and students can freely get out in a fire or other emergency. They do have it wrong though in their description, looking at this lock it has a key on both sides. So it can be locked from either side but is always open and free inside.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYg3c6UcEWk Several companies now make these.

But I would not expect the schools to use these locks, They don't have any money, after all its all been used up on "Turf Fields"

The County is On "The ball" . The Schools sure arn't.

While we can probably take steps to make it safersafer, these sorts of incidents are so rare that spending a lot of money on it is foolhardy. It would be like tornado drills. Are they possible? Yes. Is it likely enough to be worth it? No.

O, good name. What you have offered is nothing worth keeping. Any way you spell it, just one big O.
