Macy's at Springfield Town Center Closing?
Posted by: Springfield Shopper ()
Date: September 16, 2015 09:17AM

I was in Macy's at Springfield Town Center yesterday and overheard the employees discussing that the store would be closing permanently after the holidays. Apparently, the employees just learned about this. This is a big blow to Springfield Town Center! Has anyone else heard about this? Wonder what store will replace Macy's?

What would really make the place is a few title loan stores.

That would work well for the Springfield area.

I heard they are going to put in a Twin Peaks and a Harley Davidson place snap up the Springfield biker rallies.

Very possible, Macy's announced they were closing 40 stores last week.
http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/09/news/companies/macys-store-closings/

It could actually be a positive for the Mall/Town Center. It's the closest spot in the complex to the Metro/VRE. Redevelop as a hotel/office for more mixed use.

They own the space from acquiring Hecht's. They have furniture and mattresses and larger bunch of home crap in one.

Keeping the space also keeps other anchor store competition like Nordstrom out of the mall.

Why are there 2 Macys at Tysons (1 at Tysons Corner Center and 1 at Tysons Galleria)?

If Macy's closes, I hope they put in a mattress store there. I've gotta' go 3 blocks right now to get a mattress. If there was one at STC, then I could just walk across the street from my barrio, put one on layaway, take 3 years to pay it off and take it home by tying it with twine to the roof of my '92 Camry while holding it down additionally with my left hand as I drive my stick shift transmission and steer with only my right hand.

No you don't. There's a Sleepy's right across the street from Macys. They deliver.

I wouldn't call it a fail (even 'so far') since it was sold in the middle of the redevelopment. There's still more restaurants (Dave & Buster's, Zinburger) to open and the 'Town Center' portion hasn't even started.
There will be buildings on the restaurant side and garages replacing the parking lot. Sheehy Auto has started relocating to other spots. The Subaru portion has already moved to Backlick. (This is the view looking from 95.)

No its a Fail so far for sure. From a retail standpoint you know its failing when literally dozens of retail spaces are empty. Reminds me of Landmark Mall with fresh paint. Its poorly laid out and has weak anchors. The parking sucks and the hours crossover from day to night does not exist. I have yet to go there and see as many people as before it closed. If target were not there the place would be deserted.

They better hurry up on the residential (office aint going up anytime soon in this market). Id bet its sold by the bank within 12 months.

It's a marathon for the developers, not a sprint.
One can also simply look at the mall map and see it isn't 'literally dozens of spaces' that are empty. A quick count comes out to 19 with 120 stores open/opening soon. That's not a bad rate, especially in this economy.

Also not listed are the reports of Suiteblanco and Uniqlo opening stores as well as Balducci's in the remaining 3 larger spaces.

'the hours crossover from day to night does not exist' - WTF does this mean???

THE JOKE (up here)

YOU (down here)

Look, mang...if I have it delivered? Then I get to miss out on poorly tying it to my roof and having it fall off and fuck up some gringos sled on the way home, ese! What's the fun in that, holmes?

Uniqlo pulled out last October. Zinburger was supposed to open in January, all work there appears to have stopped. The Penney's wing is only 40% occupied. The food court only has 3 tennants and they can't entice anyone else in.

Gotta live up to that "no fixed address" description in the ffx police blotter.

Online shopping has mostly killed retail (except places like Target and Walmart)....who can compete with Amazon with their free 2-day shipping if you have PRIME and most places ship for free in 2-3 days anyways? Why not if it saves you $20 on the product AND your gas and time to get it straight to your door? Notice even grocery stores have online delivery now, people don't even want to go grocery shopping anymore....

....between that and people only working part-time instead of full and having to shell outo more for their healthcare so less discretionary income (thanks Obamacare!) no one can afford to go shopping anymore.

Adios Macy's, I will come by to check the clearance rack in December. Other than that I can get my stuff online for cheaper....

I still want to try clothes on before I buy them. I still want to check out furniture before I order it for my home.

The problem retail is having is that people go to a store like Macy's, try on the clothes, figure out what they like and then go home and find it cheaper on the internet. I'm sure that the restaurants and entertainment venues are doing fine in that mall. People still gotta eat.

I personally, enjoy going to the mall and I use coupons and sales to get good deals. I rarely order off the internet.

The department stores and restaurants/entertainment venues should work together to encourage people to spend money at the mall.

If you spend $50 or more at Macy's you get $5 off your meal at Maggiano's. Or discount movie tickets. Whatever.

Zinburger pushed back to 'this fall'. Dave & Buster's is most of the Penny's wing (upstairs and downstairs) so it is occupied and will supposedly open in December.
I'm not going to defend the amount of time it takes to open, but they are occupied. (It's a marathon, not a sprint.)

Actually the food court only has 3 space left. There are 5 spots open now.
BGR, Thai Max, Turtle Back Bistro, Haagan Daz are on the opening soon.

Damn! I'm not even a big fan of the place. I just like actual facts, not BS.

According to the PREIT presentation, 94.4 percent of Springfield Town Center space is now leased or committed, 40,000 square feet of new leases are under negotiation and a $6 million renovation is currently underway at Macy’s, one of the mall’s three anchors (along with Target and JCPenney). The mall is expected to reach 95 percent occupancy by the fourth quarter of 2017.

Joe Coradino, PREIT CEO, said Wednesday during the fourth quarter earnings call that the recently opened Dave & Buster’s is showing “chain-leading sales performance” — a sign of the strength of the market — and the mall is “well on its way to stabilization.” Saks Off 5th, the fashion outlet from Saks Fifth Avenue, is currently under construction adjacent to the food court, above Nordstrom Rack.
