Police Say 2 Teens Fired Into Homes
Shootings Linked to Gang Ouster

By Candace Rondeaux
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 2, 2006; Page B02

Two Sterling teenagers were charged yesterday with firing more than 30 shots into five homes in Sterling Park last month, critically injuring a man asleep in his bedroom and damaging property, officials said.

Investigators believe that the two 16-year-olds targeted the homes during a 30-minute shooting spree in eastern Loudoun County in retaliation for being kicked out of a gang, Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson said at a news conference to announce the arrests.

The pair were charged with malicious wounding, five counts of firing a missile into an occupied dwelling, five counts of reckless use of a firearm, using a firearm during the commission of a felony, burglary, auto theft and arson, Simpson said.

A third teenager was charged with helping the two 16-year-olds break into a Sterling home and steal two weapons, which authorities believe were used in the shooting, Simpson said. The teenager was not charged with being directly involved in the shootings.

It was not clear what gang the teenagers might have been affiliated with, Simpson said. The youths were not identified because they were charged as juveniles.

The July 19 shootings spanned a two-mile stretch of the largely working-class neighborhood. Shots were first fired about 1:15 a.m. at a townhouse on Coventry Square. Bullets pierced the front of the home, critically injuring a 47-year-old man. He was listed in critical but stable condition yesterday at Washington Hospital Center, authorities said.

The shooters struck again about 1:30 a.m., hitting the front of a ranch house on North Argonne Avenue, officials said. Homes on Margate and Holborn courts were also targeted. In all, seven homes were damaged by gunfire, but the boys were charged with shooting at only five of them because investigators believe two were struck by stray bullets.

Investigators recovered the guns used in the shootings, but Simpson declined to specify the type of weapons. According to search warrants recently issued for several Sterling Park homes in and near the targeted areas, investigators were looking for a shotgun and a second unidentified weapon.

The shooting suspects were also charged in the theft of a 1997 Toyota Corolla that was set ablaze on Route 7 shortly after the shootings. The car was stolen from North Amelia Street and was last seen at 10 o'clock the night before the spree.

Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney James E. Plowman said the suspects were charged as juveniles, but he said the crimes were serious enough that they may be tried as adults.

The teens are being held at the Loudoun juvenile detention center.

Darn it, I don't need my gun after all, the Police can protect me. Interesting that the teens targeted a home with guns to get the weapons.

Probably pending and it just hasn't been announced yet. If they can prove that they intended to murder the critically wounded individual, then it's attempted murder. If they fess up that the shooting of that individual was an accident, then the charge they can face is malicious wounding.

multiple attempted murder charges:

* 7 shot, out of a possible many more

* intentful destruction of vehicle and fire that could have spread to kill more people

* gang affiliation

* apparent feel that this will help their status and they can't do much time

all lead to a death penalty to show people in Sterling what is real
