Why were so many school buses late today?

Why were so many school buses late arriving to school today? New bell schedule, drivers unfamiliar with their routes, or just poor planning?

The buses couldn't start as the weather was too nice...

Well, being the first day of school in months, I don't suppose that has anything to do with it?

Also, all county high schools have a later bell schedule

+1 Kids don't know how to dress for this type of nice weather. They have to stand outside for long periods of time. It's unfair to other the kids to make them go to school on days like today.

It's called school board stupidity. Adding the school buses to primetime rush hour. This is what happens when you let "soccer moms" who don't work on a school board.

Fairfax County teens will get extra sleep next fall under a new initiative approved late Thursday that will push back the first class of the day in high schools to 8 a.m. or after.

The school board voted 11 to 1, with board member Kathy Smith (Sully) opposed, to delay start times to between 8 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. in the county’s 22 high schools and three secondary schools.

“The issue of later start times has been debated and explored for more than a decade in this community,” said Tammy Derenak-Kaufax, School Board chairman. “The growing body of research on the health benefits for adolescents has become so clear and compelling, we felt that we had to make a change.”

Another reason: Kiss 'n Ride lines are much longer for about the first week of school. After that, many parents put them on the bus. The huge Kiss 'n Ride lines cause gridlock at many schools and buses are stuck in that too.

Say you have 20 minutes to drop off at one school and get to the first stop for the next school and it takes 20+ minutes to get away from the first school?

Result: next school is gonna be late. And the school after that will be even later. It's like the snowball effect.

You lie. No one can access FU from school, especially if cell phone use is not allowed. Go back to class.

You can't expect more than 50% of Fairfax county buses to work. They're buses for christ sake.

I suppose next you'll be demanding that Fairfax county Public schools go Monday-Friday.

Stop with the craziness!

Now don't you go giving them any crazy ideas. Going a whole week of school. Sheesh. The nerve.

My kids got to sleep in a bit longer today. Actually had time for breakfast and even took out the trash for a change. They seemed more alert as well.

The bus arrived on time and I even made it to work earlier than usual.

Overall a success from my viewpoint.

Definitely worth the extra money FCPS spent to adjust the schedules.

Tax money well spent.

I will vote accordingly.

Glad you're happy about it. Thanks to the late high school start times, my fourth-grader was on the bus, in traffic, for an hour and a half this afternoon and got home at 5:30 p.m.

I will vote accordingly, too.

I'm glad to hear one parent in Fairfax county likes the rush hour starts times.

It completely screwed over my morning and the kids were stuck in traffic on their bus this morning.

Rush hour starts at 4pm? In Fairfax? really where? I would consider moving closer to your school. Even if rush hour doubled the travel time that means you live 45 min from your kids school - too far. Poor parent planning...

Rush hour in Virginia officially begins at 3:30 pm, when the HOV lanes are restricted. Drive west or south from DC and you will see that many people leave the office at 3 pm, they must start at 6 am.

So yes, 4:00 is in rush hour around here.

Rush hour can and does even start before 3 pm depending on where you are traveling. Some areas like I-495 North from Route 66 to the American Legion Bridge rush hour seems to start these days before 10 am and does not end until after 7 pm.

In case anyone missed the article, the DC area officially has the worst traffic/commute in the country.

The house cow that thinks rush hour does not start until 5-6 pm has never had to be anywhere in this county other than her local Starbucks.

Thanks, so in that case earlier bus schedule would make no difference since early rush starts at 6 am. Unless that is you bus before 6 am.

Do you really know anything about how the new schedule works?

Middle schoolers basically took over the early start times, so those buses are still on the road. Many, many elementary schools now start later because your Precious needed more beauty sleep. Correspondingly, they end later, which means their buses run later, which means little kids now sit in rush hour traffic, fucking things up for everyone.

Clearly, you were one of the SAHMs who had nothing better to do with her day except nag FCPS with your pet project, SLEEP. And all so Precious can text until 1 a.m. instead of midnight now...

Obviously, anyone who thinks rush hour starts at 5 p.m. hasn't been in the workforce for a long time.

Looking at you, SAHMs who created this SLEEP shit storm in the first place.

It starts around 3 if you have to get on 66 anywhere.

Firstly, adults that live in an area with three hour rush hours in the morning and evening have made that choice - dont blame the kids. Secondly, adults that live in and area where they dont have enough busses and schools to start classes all at once have made a choice - dont blame the kids.

The fact that 'middle school' has taken the early morning is the half-step measure to cut costs. Dont complain about that either. Kids getting up at 530-6am to get to school is absurd. At least its only middle school kids suffering now.

If you made the choice to live in this area educate yourself to the point where you can be employed with a flex schedule so you can 1. drive non-peak 2. raise your children.

For conservatives you guys sure cry and moan a lot about how hard your life is and how expensive caring for our kids is. Jeez grow up.

No one is blaming the kids. We're blaming the idiots that voted for SLEEP, both parental and FCPS-based.

Hilarious that you assume people can pick and choose among "flex" jobs in this insanely expensive area. Either both parents are working or one parent makes a ton of cash to be able to live in Fairfax County, no "flex" involved.

We all moved here for the schools, just like you did, but I suspect you are now retired and it's not your problem anymore. So you sit in your rocking chair and wag your finger at people who are just trying to get a decent education for their children under FAR more expensive and traffic-congested environment than you had to face.

Wow. What a clusterfuck the past three days have been. You now have thousands of additional cars and buses navigating the roads at the height of the morning rush hour. Holy fuck. It took nearly 25 minutes to get from Hunter Mill Road to the Vienna metro today. Vale Road is now trashed; Sutton Road is trashed; Courthouse Road is trashed. VA Center Blvd. is trashed.

66, 50 and 395 into DC have all been fucked...and consistently too from about 7-10am. I'm pretty sure the ever-present horrendous traffic will be the thing that finally makes me give up and leave Fairfax.
