Watch out for critters!
Posted by: Melissa ()
Date: May 26, 2009 01:16PM

As I was driving my daughter to school this morning, I saw a snake in the road that someone had run over. On my way back, I noticed that the snake had made his way into the middle of the road, so I stopped, put him into a bag and took him home to call the vet. The good folks at Pender take wildlife and will rehabilitate and release them if possible. Sadly, this little guy died on the way there.

The rain is forcing critters to seek drier shelter (that, and it's mating season). Please keep an eye out for them and help them cross!

This concludes my public service message. :o)

RIP little snakey-snake.

A black snake will fuck you up. Just because it isn't poisonous doesn't mean it won't bite. Black snakes are incredibly aggressive when provoked and will strike when threatened.

I have to be anti-snake on the premise that I own a rat, and we do NOT say the "s" word or the "c" word in my house.

Aww, big meanie! ;o) Yeah, not a lot of people here at work shared my sympathy, either. This lady stopped to ask me what I was carrying. As I got closer to her car, she started rolling up the window and said, "Oh, I don't need to see it. Snakes scare me!"

Shoot, I wish more black snakes would visit my yard. The mice move into my garage every year. My Shepherd scared the last snake away...

I can't see the movie, but I'm assuming it's a video of a rat just walking around, minding its own business. Then a cat and snake come out of nowhere, all, "Hey look, it's a rat, let us eat it." Then the rat strangles the cat to death with the snake.

Later, he has sex with female rats.

Aww, well I am not down for snakes as pets as I am also a rat lover. Just not a fan of the wild rodents that sneak into the house, chew stuff up, and rapidly procreate. I catch and release them, but it's like spitting in the ocean -- for every two I catch, there are 20 more laughing at me for being such a pansy.

An old friend had a python as a pet. He bought this adorable little mouse and named him Peaches. I loved Peaches. After a couple of weeks of bonding, I went over and asked where Peaches was. He pointed to the snake's full belly. I cried like a little bitch. Poor Peaches.

I wouldn't mind having a rat as a pet, but its got to be one of those mutant NYC sewer rats that look like a small dog. I don't care too much for tiny critters.

Fuck yeah they will. My neighbor's kid got bit by one last summer. His mom managed to pin it by the neck with a shovel (trying to decapitate it) but was just stuck and bleeding. So I came out an put a cap in its ass to put it out of it's misery.

I used to have a red tail boa, so I have some appreciation for snakes - even though that bastard bit me once (it was my fault).

I was at Lake Fairfax on Saturday morning saw 5 water moccasins at the bottom of the spillway between the lake and the creek. They were waiting for fish and other critters to fall down the spillway. Was kind of creepy to see so many of them. Foreigners go there and picnic all the time, hope they don't go playing in the rocks near there ~

This sounds like a great place for them to picnic. Hope they bring the whole tribe

There are only two kinds of snakes in the world. The ones that are already
dead and the ones I haven't found yet.

And now for the obligatory lyrics that belong in this thread post:

Well, I'm the Crawlin' King Snake
And I rule my den
I'm the Crawlin' King Snake
And I rule my den
Yeah, don't mess 'round with my mate
Gonna use her for myself
Caught me crawlin', baby, window
Grass is very high
Keep on crawlin' till the day I die
Crawlin' King Snake
And I rule my den
You better give me what I want
Gonna crawl no more
Caught me crawlin', baby
Crawlin' 'round your door
Seein' everything I want
I'm gonna crawl on your floor
Let's crawl
And I rule my den
C'mon, give me what I want
Ain't gonna crawl no more
Alright, crawl a while
C'mon crawl
C'mon crawl
Get on out there on your hands and knees, baby
Crawl all over me
Just like the spider on the wall
Ooo, we gonn' crawl, one more
Well, I'm the Crawlin' King Snake
And I rule my den
Call me the Crawlin' King Snake
And I rule my den
Yeah, don't mess 'round with my mate
Gonna use her for myself

Melissa,
I'm a sucker for all animals too.
The other day I was driving up my street and saw a bird standing in the middle of the road. He didn't fly away as I got closer and slowly drove by, so I stopped and walked back to check on him. Once I got within a few feet, he looked at me funny and flew off. My friend that was with me gave me no end of grief about it afterwards.

It's true that Blakesnakes can be pretty aggressive, but if you pick them (or any other snake) up properly, you'll be fine. I don't believe snakes make good pets, but if I saw an injured one, I would try to help.

Also, +1 for Tom T. Hall

It's a Rat Snake, so yeah, you are definitely alright if you wish to pick it up, HOWEVER, if you are bitten, you still need to clean the wound thoroughly, and observe it closely, as Snake bites introduce tons of bacteria into any bite wound they establish.

Actually cottonmouths no longer inhabit northern virginia, as they did 30 or so years ago - you can only find them in south/southeast VA these days. Copperheads, on the other hand, are a dime a dozen up here....
