FCPS to Participate in USDA Summer Food Service Program

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) summer food service program for children, a program established to ensure that students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals during the school year continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Free meals that meet federal nutrition guidelines will be provided to children at approved sites throughout Fairfax County.

Meals will be provided to all children without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for every child regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital or family status, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals may be provided, pending qualification, at the sites and times listed as follows:

Will Boosterthon employees lurk in the lunchroom trying to have lunch with the kids?

Boosterthon people have been known to ask kids about their favorite classes, people they admire and so on. Can you imagine kids asking these questions and the answers they might get?

Favorite classes: intolerance 101, casting the first stone 226A-B, and my favorite, the will of God 666.

Most admired people: Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Oral Roberts, and that great musical talent, Jimmy "I have sinned" Swaggart.

One can imagine some kid going home and saying "Mom, Debbie Dimwit from Boosterthon told me she admired a man who played the piano and paid a woman to play with his pee-pee, why did he do that?"

Has anyone alerted The Lamb Center as to the feeding locations? They can get the feeding transports loaded and be ready for action.

This is what's wrong with our country. Hand outs and feeding programs. Where is the motivation to provide for your family when the government will do it for you?

Really? You can't buy some fresh fruit, grow some tomatoes in a planter on your apartment balcony, make your own bread, boil some beans, have a jar of peanut butter?

We are raising helpless families who know they can count on handouts; rent and utility assistance, free school supplies, free lunches, backpacks stuffed with food for the weekend, school fees waived, free clothes.

I'd look at this list as my real estate guide. Do not buy a house in any of these school districts. There's your demographic study. What does this tell you about the tax base?

Yup. It never fails. You read the articles on the front pages and they almost always have tattoos, smoke, drink alcohol, have piercings, drug problems, and/or a nice phone (which we probably pay for, also). And many times they are overweight.

And yet, their children are starving.

Something is very wrong.

If you can't afford to live in one of the most affluent counties in the country, then DON'T COME HERE.

It's hard to be against feeding a hungry child, but the culture of dependency is hard to break. Drive by any construction site/lawn crew/house cleaners and it is almost all very hardworking Hispanic people. I wonder what it will look like a generation on - will these kids have figured out that work is for suckers, that it's easier for wait for someone else to feed you? Seems like that is what we are teaching them. As Ronald Reagan said, the best social program in the world is a job.

Where is the shame in anyone anymore? I would have sooner shriveled up and died as a child rather than shuffle with my head down to my school for a meal handout during the summer.

Is there any shame left in being poor?

When I was a kid in NY, the kids on free lunch got a special card - everyone knew who they were. I worked in a grocery store in HS, and if you used food stamps they came in a book and it was very obvious if you used them. Technology like EBT has made who uses these programs basically anonymous to the community around them. I'm not so sure that is a good thing. A little shame or remorse for being on the dole might be a good thing.
