What was Landmark and Route 1 like....

Just wondering,

What was the Landmark area of Alexandria/Fairfax Co. and the Route 1 Corridor part of NOVA like 20, 30, or 40 years ago?

I ask as I want to know how different these areas were like then from today?

Rt 1 from 495 to Ft. Belvoir, wasn't much in the 60s, and is much worse today. The money was always on river/east side of Rt 1. Gum Springs was really sketchy in the 60s to 80's and has been cleaned up a bit.

So the Rt 1 corridor, in my lifetime, never had a "heyday", it was always working-class/white trash and never really nice, and it's just gone down hill to today. Oh, the old trailer parks have been cleaned up, so that's a plus I guess.

Landmark? I guess it's heyday was in the 70s when the condos were new, now, well it's a 3rd world ghetto on either side of I95. At a bare minimum, in Alexandria, you want to live well east of Landmark, probably east of Quaker Lane.

There used to be a drive in movie theater and a mini golf course on Route 1. Costco currently occupies the property.

Landmark was an open air mall. It had these benches in the middle that had these stone/concrete ramps on either side of them with planters in the middle. As a kid, I loved running up and down those ramps. It had a Raleigh's if I remember correctly.

Actually some of those trailer parks are still there. They're just aren't any more directly on the road and most have bigger buildings in front of them. There's two right near the Costco, one of which wraps all the way around behind the Wal-Mart and over toward the Home Depot, another where Lockheed intersects Rt. 1, and another next to the center with Chuck E. Cheese. And I'm probably missing one or two.
