Or is there a best route? I'm expecting any way I go will suck, but dont have to be until 1pm.

Any suggestions?

Metro. You can't leave your car for days, but you could cab it to the closest metro station.

+1, depends on the amount of luggage.

What time of day? How many people. I would go straight down RT66. Takes you straight to Union station.

The best route depends on what time of the day you are making the trip and how many people will be in your car.

If you are doing it well after morning rush hour is over (starting after 10:30 am), the best way would be to take I66. It dumps you off onto Constitution Avenue and you would then have just a couple of miles straight to Union Station.

If you are doing it during morning rush hour and you will have two or more people in your car (including yourself), I66 is the way to go. You will get to DC in no time. Your only trouble will come as you try to exit I66 to make the last two miles of the trip (see last sentence of next paragraph).

If you are doing it during morning rush hour and you are alone in your car, just take Route 50 all of the way in. Avoid going over the Roosevelt bridge at the end and take the GW Parkway, instead, to the 14th Street Bridge. Take the SE/SW Freeway, exit at the U.S. Capitol exit toward the U.S. Senate, and you are there. That 25 mile trip could be a two-hour long drive, though, on a tough morning rush hour day.

If you have to be there in the 9:00 am hour, it might well be worth it to leave home before 7:00 am. If you do, this trip would likely take only about 45 minutes.
