Where i come from the car inspection was always due at the same time for everyone. Here it depends when the inspection was done last which is confusing and error prone.
What do you guys do to remember the state & emission inspections?

In NC where i come from we no longer had a windshield sticker and the vehicle’s inspection is synchronized to be due the same month as the vehicle’s registration renewal each year.

You usually get a ticket for not having an inspection. Odd.

It's a PITA in VA. As someone who has 4 cars I am at the gas station for either safety or emissions almost every other month.

I registered my email with the DMV. I get notices.

I suck dick at the rest area on I-66 at the Fairfax County / Prince William County line. It has nothing to do with car inspections, but I do it in a Daewoo Lanos.

Just glance at your windshield when you drive.... That is the easiest (only) way.


Since you are new to tbe state, the sticker expires on the last day of what ever month is shown. There is always big lines at gas stations at the end of the month.


The easiest thing to do is I normally just buy the stickers from a guy I know since I have a few cars and don't feel like waiting and wasting my time like that; but the most important reason to buy them in my opinion is so that the low-life inspector doesn't put their greasy hands all over my nice vehicles getting them filthy then saying some bullshit like the brakes pads need to be changed when there is obviously plenty of padding left. They try to pull that shit so you get the work done at their shop while you are there, thus making you a victim of fraud.

DMV has no idea when your safety inspection is due. They know when your emissions is due but NOT the safety.

It's really not that hard. And it happens the same time every year so...it's really not a challenge to remember that it's coming up.

Ihave synced my inspection monthly date with my tag renewal date. So every other year I get the reminder about tags and emmissions, which means I only need to remember the inspection during the off year for safety.

plus whenI wash car I see the notice, and every time i sit in the drivers seat I see the expiration month (backwards). So its not a realybig deal.

If you can't see the sumber and realize what it means, maybe you should give the keys to someone else and stop driving...

Thanks. I'm old, I get confused. Once I drove around for months with the application for inspection. I never noticed the sticker.

You can just move up your inspection to coincide with the same month your plate renewal is due if you have that much trouble. So you lose a few months on one inspection. Problem is that your plate might be on a two year renewal. Plus, your emissions inspection might be in there somewhere at an odd time. Mine already is.

Can you write it down on your calendar?

I have the dealer do it when I am due for service work or an oil change around the time on the sticker is up. Plus, if there is some jiggy fuck part that needs to be fixed to pass inspection, the dealer will most likely have jiggy fuck part in stock so I don't have to drive around with a reject sticker and then go to the dealer.

OP is a perfect reason why we should have an exam before you're allowed to have children. OP, of course, would fail.

It's all about the money. The state motor vehicle safety inspection is a farce. The most important thing, they don't check.....tire pressure.

States that have done away with the periodic motor vehicle inspection see no difference in accident rates. The extra miles driven to inspection stations and the frustrations from waiting in long lines probably cause more accidents than the state inspection ever prevents.

It's just a new habit i need to learn. Too bad it's still a manual process.

Yes its still a "manual" process. someone has to physically look at your car and check off the boxes.

Personally I'm glad its id done by private garages. if youve ever had to deal with state run inspection programs. you wanna talk about long lines and frustration...

I know that you can get a ticket for expired PLATES even if your car is in your driveway. Can they give you a ticket if the car is in the driveway with an expired inspection sticker?

I would think not. Or what about in the street?

This is true for the most part. I have seen cars that have no business being on the road pass inspection. There are plenty of small town garages that will gladly accept a "tip" in order to pass inspection.
