Will there be an steam-powered vintage mattress mill on display, operated by a reenactor with a gay 90's handlebar mustache and fedora?

At 2:00 PM on a Saturday? Plenty of locals will be out shopping, but you should be able to make it along easily enough on 123 at that hour. You might even have time to stop in at Silva's Patisserie (next to The Virginian). Their in-house seeded rye bread is available only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It's s-o-o-o-o-o good! Worth waiting in line for if there is one.

The original Fairfax County Courthouse was built in 1742 at Spring Fields (where the Toilet Bowl Building is today), and it was likely the first bit of European construction in the Vienna area. The first major landowner is thought to have been Colonel Charles Broadwater, a prominent colonial soldier and public servant, who owned much of the land in the region and built a home -- called Spring Field -- in the area in 1754. His purported grave exists today in a small private cemetery at the intersection of Tapawingo Road and Frederick Street SW in Vienna. In the 1760´s John Hunter, a native of Ayr County in Scotland, married Colonel Broadwater's daughter. Partly by marriage and partly by purchase, Hunter succeeded Colonel Broadwater as the area's principal landowner. It was John Hunter who built the first house of record within the town limits in 1767, calling it Ayr Hill after his native land.

As the village grew, it assumed the name of Ayr Hill, by which it was known for nearly a century. Over this time, large estates were gradually reduced by sale, gift and inheritance, but few houses were actually built in the village. In the 75 years following the construction of Ayr Hill, there were typically no more than eight homes within the town proper. In the late 1840's, however, Moses Cummins (a prosperous northerner) brought to Ayr Hill a plow factory. Cummins' plows were the first iron-beamed plows to be manufactured in the United States. They were highly prized and were shipped far and wide in the years before the Civil War.

By the late 1850´s, the burgeoning village found itself in need of local medical services and eventually convinced Dr. William Hendrick to relocate to Ayr Hill. Dr. Hendrick's only demand was that the town agree to change its name to Vienna, the same as that of his hometown in upstate New York. The change was quickly adopted.

The railroad reached Vienna in 1858 and provided the impetus for growth into a real village. Known then as the Loudoun & Hampshire Railway, the line originated in Alexandria and was planned to extend into the rich coal fields of Hampshire County, but natural barriers and the coming of the Civil War prevented the completion of that plan.

During the Civil War, Vienna became an alternate campground for the two contending forces. This was a confusing time for residents. It was hard to tell friend from foe, and the area changed hands so often that many families moved away for the duration of the war. The fifth skirmish of the war, part of the First Battle of Manassas, took place near the Park Street railroad crossing where the Vienna Community Center now stands. This incident marked the first time in history that a railroad line had been used tactically in battle. More than a year after the war was over, troops were still encamped in Vienna, and bugle calls regularly roused even civilian residents at an early hour.

Still, many northern families moved to the Vienna area in the years after the war. These new residents were not carpetbaggers nor office seekers, but admirable and industrious sorts who sought to make Vienna their permanent home due to its mild climate, fertile soil, and nearness to the nation's capital. Among these newcomers was Major Orrin E. Hine, a Freedmen´s Bureau agent, radical Republican, farmer, and realtor, who settled in Vienna in 1866. By 1885, he had come to own some 6,500 acres in the vicinity. In 1890 the village of then some 300 souls incorporated itself as a town "in order to improve its public schools and streets." Major Hine was elected Vienna´s first mayor and remained in that post until his death in 1899. At century´s end, he was widely acknowledged to have accomplished much in rebuilding and constructively guiding a town so torn by war just a few decades earlier. Both Orrin and Hine Streets exist in Vienna today in his memory.

There is little traffic in Vienna at 2:45 on a workday afternoon. Saturday shopping, reasonable weather, and the Town's 125th Birthday celebrations may have put people on the roads.

Why sir, I am insulted...there is never traffic in Vienna, especially for those of us who know the secret routes that weave through the Maple Avenue and its stately trees that provide beneficial shade to benevolent mattress factory owner and sullen Irishman alike. The latter is damned lucky to have his job at all if you ask me.

Let's be careful out there! Vienna's curves, cul-de-sacs, dead ends, and cut-offs weave a veritable maze of terror for non-resident drivers. Untold numbers have been lost trying to cut diagonally off Gallows to reach Park via Vienna's neighborhood streets. Don't become another one of those!

Thanks to all who were able to stop by as part of the Happy Birthday Vienna event. The weather turned out great (by recent standards) and a good time was had by all. If you weren't able to visit us today. keep in mind that you won't have to wait another 125 years to see the best little railroad in Northern Virginia in operation. Our regular monthly series of open houses will kick off in just two weeks -- Saturday, March 14, from 1:00 to 5:00 at the old Vienna Depot. Admission is always free, and really, who doesn't enjoy watching a top-notch model railroad chugging along and doing its thing. We'll leave the door open for you.

Don't take it personally. He's the Vienna Asshole, the biggest douchebag currently on this site. He sees ghosts in every post.

Why the fuck would anyone want to go to a train exhibit run by some bitter, angry old bastard like him? Parents, keep your kids away. Keep yourselves away. All it takes is one passing comment which doesn't meet his political leanings and he'll be in your face screaming "ASSHOLE!!!" and telling you how many degrees he has. lulz

Dickhead spends weeks belittling anyone driving through Vienna from elsewhere in the area "down-county goobers" who aren't wanted or good enough to be there and then thinks he can switch up and play all nice when he wants them to come see his toy train set.

Fuck you.

I think it was the gallows where the toilet bowl is; the courthouse was over near Courthouse Rd. (further east branching off Gallows). Or am I backwards on that? (Cuz where I'm talking about is where the "courthouse was around here somewhere" historical plaque markers are located.)

I snuck right on around, there are a million side streets in that part of town and they all seem to intersect at one spot or another, I was just surprised to see that level of traffic for what appeared to be a giant tent and a few side streets closed off

The folks at Mary Ellen Henderson didn't do much of a job. Your knowledge of English (and English literature) is even worse than your knowledge of the streets of Vienna. The basics...

unpeel
transitive verb un·peel
: to remove an outer covering (as bark, a rind, or a peel) from

The site of the building is pretty well fixed in the record, but there's no actual evidence that there ever was a gallows (of that sort) existing in association with the first Fairfax County Courthouse. Many of the pertinent early records were lost during the Civil War, and the Court moved to Alexandria in 1752 in any case (after the self-promoting town offered to build a new one and give it to the County for free), but in the surviving court records for 1742-1752, there is no mention of a gallows nor of any hangings. It's possible that condemned blacks might have been hanged nearby, as records were not necessarily kept of such things, but trees would typically have been seen as sufficient in such cases. Much remains unclear, but the term gallows might actually have referred to the vertical frames on which cattle and hogs were butchered at the time.

LOL. Had to look up the school, but I doubt they teach kids to use the word unpeel when the word peel would suffice. Unfortunately, wherever you went couldn't accomplish such a simple task. Further, to peel back the layers of an onion is a common English language idiom. Unpeeling an onion isn't. I assume English isn't your first language. I admire your desire to learn a new language and wish you luck with your endeavor.

Like, could I set up a Lawrence of Arabia ambush with the train set and dynamite the tracks when a train full of miniature Turks is on it?

I think that would be cool!

Pro-tip for ya. Giving props to your own post after you've been burned is weak and pathetic, not to mention oh so obvious. If you try and deny it now, it'll be even more pathetic than using the word unpeel and then giving props to your own post. Do you really want to go three for three in showing the world what a dunce you are? Something tells me you do....

Few might have expected it of you I suppose, but perhaps some of the children at Mary Ellen Henderson take it upon themselves to read. As Merriam-Webster has confirmed, your "unpeel" protests were baseless and the result of your own narrow ignorance.

While I speak others as well, English is indeed my first language and an advanced facility with it -- one that so plainly seems to exceed your own -- has been a key to my professional success over the years.

I so far admire nothing at all about you and have no real expectation of that situation changing any time soon.

More than a million people live in Fairfax County. I don't control what very many of them do. But I am fairly certain of the fact that more than just one among them knows full well that claiming "unpeel" not to be a word was kind of a total freaking fuck-up. So it goes when a total freaking fuck-up is all you really are. Go look up hoisted with one's own petard. See if any of those are words.

They were hardly baseless and they still stand. Nowhere did I indicate that it wasn't a word. You merely inferred it. I did, however, make fun of you for using it. Irregardless is a word you can find in Merriam Webster as well. It doesn't mean you should use it if you want to sound even half way intelligent. The same can be said of unpeel, which is why very few if any use the ridiculous term.

In fact, it is obvious you were attempting to use the popular idiom of peeling (back the layers of) the onion. The word unpeel does not appear in any educated person's version of that idiom.
