Question for parents regarding school closures?
Posted by: Drake6 ()
Date: February 19, 2015 08:56PM

Why does us getting a day off of school bother you so much? Regardless of the conditions, you don't pay for our public schooling and if you guys have jobs how are we affecting you? I believe they were harder on you guys when you went to school, but you still got days off, so why can't you just be happy for us?

They need to teach you about TAXES first.

I understand what you're saying and get that you pay for our education, but we're just going to succeed you guys in your career paths and probaly just settle down here in nova in the same neighborhood. We have 13 days built in. The last week and a half of school is pointless so these days are used for that. We used MORE THAN 15 days in 2009-10 and still we were able to learn. And if were being honest, what do you really expect you children to be when grow up?

The problem with unplanned days off from school is that employers rarely give those same days off to their employees. So unless you've got a teenager, a day home from school for a pair of working parents means somebody needs to spend a sick day/personal day/vacation day in order to stay home.

Not every parent can absorb a week worth of time off. That's the biggest issue most parents I know have with snow days.

I for one don't mind schools being closed tomorrow. The house is a mess, the kitchen and bathrooms need cleaning and the laundry needs to be done. Their Mom has a nice list of things for them to do tomorrow. We'll let them sleep in some, maybe till 8:30-9:00. Before you say anything, remember, you live under our roof, you live by our rules. I think I got the only teenagers who wish school was open tomorrow.

Snow days do not change your tax bill, moron.

How do these parents cope with after school care? How about no-school teacher workdays, or Spring break? If both parents work, it's a safe bat they already have arrangements with child-care providers for multiple other scenarios. Why would an event that everyone knows is likely to happen at some point not also be arranged for in advance? The idea that snow days come as some shock and surprise to parents is silly.

Sob, sob, sob. Did someone tell you that having kids would be a piece of cake? Stop being such a freaking baby. You KNEW FULL WELL this sort of thing would happen at some point. It's happening to every other parent in the County at the same time, and you want some sort of special attention for it? What a whiner!

They pay for after-school care. Paying for full day care is an additional cost, if it's even available. Many of the daycare facilities are also closed when schools are closed, so that's another issue.

Right now, there's little predictability on whether FCPS will close, and the decisions are made late the night before. It's not always easy to arrange childcare for the next day at 9 PM at night. When it comes to Spring Break and other events scheduled in advance, that's something you can plan for.

Your children are perfectly capable of staying home. I stayed home alone with nobody else since third grade. It's time they grow up. Leave them with some TV dinners and they already have Internet.

Its not about education its about babysitting. Our whole school system is set up to be babysitting. Parents get pissed when the babysitter cancels. No one with a kid in school believes that 5 or 10 snow days will make any difference in the quality or amount of things learned. No one.

Here in VA we require 180 days and 990 hours grades 1-12*. About the average +/-50 hrs. in the US. Some of the highest rated countries are under 800 hrs instruction.

"According to the OECD, the hours of compulsory instruction per year in these countries range from 608 hours in Finland (a top performer) to 926 hours in France (average) at the elementary level, compared to the over 900 hours required in California, New York, Texas, and Massachusetts. Of particular note, no state requires as few hours as Finland, even though Finland scores near the top of nearly every international assessment. As a matter of fact, Vermont – a high-performing state7 -- requires the fewest number of hours (700 hours) for its elementary students (grades 1-2) than any other state, and it still requires more than Finland. Vermont’s requirement is also more than the 612 hours high-achieving Korea requires of its early elementary students. Moreover, all but 5 states require more hours of instruction at the early elementary school level than the OECD countries8 average of 759 hours.

At the middle school level, total hours of instruction range from 777 hours in Finland (a top performer) to 1001 in Italy (an average performer). Three of our 5 large states, New York (990 hours), Texas (1,260 hours), and Massachusetts (990 hours) would rank near the top of all industrialized nations in number of hours required. California and Florida would rank near the middle at 900 hours but still above the OECD average of 886 hours. It should be noted that even at the middle school level, countries like Japan and Korea require fewer hours (868 and 867 respectively) than most U.S. states. So by the 8th grade, students in most U.S. states have been required to receive more hours of instruction than students in most industrialized countries, including high-performing Finland, Japan, and Korea.

That is correct. Planning out childcare is a huge problem. But, that is part of the puzzle you have to put together when you raise children.

Then don't have kids. Practice birth control.
It ain't a perfect world and none of you are perfect parents. No one wants to see a frozen kid.
But on a lighter note, we went to the moon forty five years ago and yet this "great" county can't get their school buses started?

And there is your answer. FCPS runs over 1500 buses a day. So yesterday they had 55 buses that ran 15 or more minutes late.

That's 1%. Not great. But as you say it isn't a perfect world.

Put a Toyota engine in those buses and they will start without any problems. Even a Merc engine would be better.

Buy diehard batteries. This happened last year also. A progressive county would have solved the problem. Really a very stupid issue.
And don't respond to a satirical post next time.

because the entire world doesn't revolve around you. parents have stuff they *have* to do, and when you're home unexpectedly it all goes to hell. you'll understand it when you have kids of your own someday. parents love their kids, but schedule disruptions are an epic pain in the ass when you're a grownup.

Why would an event that everyone knows is likely to happen at some point not also be arranged for in advance?

if you had advance notice of today's closure, which the rest of us learned about last night around 8pm, then i'd like to know your secret. i can plan spring break in advance because i know when it happens. nobody can predict when the school board will see its own shadow and freak out about a few snowflakes.

the unpredictability is exactly the problem.

Your kids should be the only thing in your universe. If you can't deal or cope with this concept then wear a rubber.

You exist because your mom let some dude bang her and then cum inside of her. She probably sucked his dick first, too.

Think about it.

You must be a rotten parent so fuck you. What a selfish prick. Your parents should have used rubbers.

Frankly I'm wonder what the fuck I'm paying for at this point.
