Basketball Courts
Posted by: RESton Peace ()

I was playing at Elaanor c Lawrence off 28 South regularly last year, but I decided that that place is too busy... people walking across my court while I am using it, people staring at me when I miss free throw after free throw... and way too many pesky kids.

Can anyone recommend a basketball court in the chantilly/cville/clifton area I can check out? Just throw them out there by location.

Thanks.

What about Union Mills Elementary? Or some of the other schools in that area.

Maybe a tad far from your target zone...but the courts at Nottoway Park in Vienna (6-8 of em, i cant remember) are free during the day, and busy as hell all weekend (and some evenings) with varying levels of pickup play...show up..size up where you can play, and step in and play.

I'm way too much of a pussy to join a pickup game, I just like to throw free throws to clear my mind. But I will check that park out nonetheless, thanks for the info.

"I just like to throw free throws to clear my mind."

I believe it is "shoot free throws".

I played at Nottoway years ago. It was a good place to find pick up games, but could be rough as well. Def not a place a for someone that did not know the game. There were three courts, A, B and C. I was usually on the B court, but sometimes I would take winners on the A court. If you were really good, there was always someone with winners that was always holding a spot just in case.(not for me though) I had seen guys get dumped because someone really good showed up. The courts in Reston near the corner of Glade and Reston Parkway were about the same.

Back when I played there, the Nottoway game consisted of getting your own rebounds and never passing if you ever expected to get a shot off (and inbounding made shots against the pole to yourself). Some good players there but many more, particularly on the B & C court, who thought they were a lot better than they were.

That would be me. I "thought" I was pretty good.

If you were in an A court game, with 3 or more teams waiting to play, and it was a close game. Getting off a clean shot without getting hammered was almost impossible. Best chance to score was off a rebound. Lots of arguments would break out over fouls and scoring. Because if you lost and were an average player, you would have to move to the B court or have to wait an hour or longer for winners.

The reason we don't have enough b-ball courts is because of all of the gdamn soccer fields. I suppose if the mexicants played b-ball, we would have plenty of courts

I used to play some at Nottoway, but preferred Pimmit library, and even better, the Falls Church Rec Center for pick up games. The skill level was mediocre, and you didn't need to wait long for a game except for Fridays and weekends at the rec center. Fouling was also less violent.

If you just want to shoot free throws, I'd go to any random elementary school. They don't get enough traffic for pickup games, so you'll have a hoop all to yourself.

In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points from a restricted area on the court (the free throw line; informally known as the charity stripe or foul line), and are generally awarded after a foul by the opposing team.

Each free throw is worth one point, and normally more than one is awarded. The importance of free throws is nevertheless sometimes underestimated; games have been known to be decided on them, especially when the score is close. Teams who could have sealed the game on free throws can finish with a narrow win or even a loss because of failure behind the line.

So this is your response? You chastise a guy for saying he "throws free throws" and this is your response? It's called a fucking THROW!

Did I chastise him? I think not. Why so sensitive?

You chastised RESton Peace, who is a regular here. As a fellow regular, I feel it is my duty to defend other regulars here from non-registered twats like you.

I imagine there's plenty of openings for illegal immigrants in your area. Nothing's stopping you.

He "practices" free throws, OK? And during an actual game, it's "performing" free throws.

Now that we've overcome that obstacle and clearly defined the intent of his query, where can he practice free throws?

Most FCPS elementary schools have a hoop or two on or near their playgrounds and usually no one's around to bother you or challenge you for a game.

If you want to build your confidence level, there's an 8 foot hoop at Little Run Elementary which is great practicing tomahawk jams, for, you know, real life situations in a pick up game. You never know when you'll be able to run up someone's back when they aren't looking.

I was looking for some courts around here and I tried trial memberships at Lifetime, Gold's (tower), and they both sucked. At lifetime they like to push people off one of the two full courts so that they can do some kind of fat kids fitness program with a handful of runts. So it ends up being a huge line on the other court, with large unorganized groups waiting to join in pickup games. And at golds you get to play with the musclebound freaks trying to get in some cardio or whatever. Usually there's only a couple guys there, or there is some kind of afterschool thing going on there as well.

Thanks for the location on google maps tho I'll def check it out...
