The state of Virginia is set to pass a law which would allow anti-LGBT business owners to bar gay people, purely on the basis of their sexuality.

The Virginia Bill states that anyone seeking or holding a business license from the state of Virginia in the state can refuse service or entry to gay people, on the grounds it “would violate the religious or moral convictions of such person with respect to same-sex “marriage” or homosexual behavior.”

This would make it lawful for LGBT people to be barred from hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals, and any other premise where a good or service is exchanged by someone who dislikes their sexual orientation:

One of the big questions is how would the owner of a bar, hotel, restaurant, etc, KNOW who is gay and who isn't? There needs to be something in the legislation that would assure proper identification of gays so the owner could be sure he/she was refusing service only to true gay people and not open to lawsuits by refusing service to those who the owner just might think are gay.

There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution which mandates that either the states or the Federal government enact and enforce anti-discrimination laws that apply to individuals and private businesses.

Most businesses care far more about the orientation of their cash flow than about the sexual orientation of their workers or customers. The 1950s are over. GLBTs like blacks, asians, hispanics and others have significant buying power. Most businesses want it, and understand if they do not accomodate, those groups will go to the business down the street. As for the rest, why would anyone want to do business with a company that didn't want their business?

This bill is a religious freedom bill that simply states that businesses and individuals can't be compelled by the government or quasi governmental diversity police to provide a service that conflicts with their well founded religious beliefs.
