This is actually a good thing, but do not hold your breath waiting/hoping they will do this in your front yard.
There are easements in front of most properties that the utilities can do what they want to in. So do not get your nose too out of joint.
Also they try to do as much horizontal boring these days as well.
Suck it up and hope they clean up the crappy phone poles and wiring in front of your house. It will increase the property value or at least the desirability for many people.

Yes, it is a good thing. We had them bury all our lines from the poles to the house several years ago. Power, phone, cable -- the works. That helped quite a bit, mostly because we have a pretty long run from the road. Getting the stuff out along the street put underground would be great.

I lived through a utility burial project in a suburb of Atlanta about 12 years ago. Here's how it goes, for like a year they cause multiple short term power-cable-phone outages. When the cable-internet goes out the cable people blame the power companies contractor. When the power goes out the blame goes on cable or verizon. The flow mole machines sometimes hit the gas lines and the gas lines shut off the entire area for safety. After that some gas guy has to come relight all your pilot lights because they don't trust you to do it. On top of that you have all these transient laborers in your neighborhood. They live in local cheap motels and cat call all the good looking women and girls and leave trash everywhere. The damage to the lawn is the least of your worries.
Ps, I almost forgot to mention the road closures when all the poles get removed at the end of the job and a dons john on every other street corner.

On many roads with overhead power lines the only lighting for sidewalks and streets comes from the streetlights mounted on the poles. So what happens to those lights when the lines are buried?

At least they are showing they will do a Better Job than Verizon for the FIOS, Most FIOS lines are just Spaded into the yard, that will be fun to watch Dominion cut them all Digging the Pilot Hole. But I can bet most will be along Highways, Old Keene Mill would be one of the first. We Loose Power all the time, because of the above Ground along OKM.
