THE WAR IS OVER - LONG LIVE THE WAR!

Used to be that many FXU readers had a military family connection. Not so much anymore. Tough. I'm still posting this here instead of off topic.

Dear America —

Did you hear the war in Afghanistan is over? You’re probably thinking that’s a tremendous relief for all of those military members who have been dealing with deployments for all these years and that constant, looming cloud of possible combat death.

Because, as you know, war is dangerous — and the war being over obviously means that the people are coming home and the danger is gone. Just like that — everyone is safe now. Right?

Wrong.

The U.S. and NATO announced at a ceremony Dec. 28 that the war in Afghanistan, as of Jan. 1, 2015, has formally ended. But instead of a wave of V-Day like celebrations sweeping military families, we felt a swell of betrayal.

Yes, betrayal.

You chose your JOB and that was all it was - the country owes you nothing. There was no defending of freedom in this war or any since WWII.

You were paid for a service that you CHOSE, that is the sum of your choices.

Bullshit. Look at the Iraq war. We went over there because Iraq caused 9/11. I mean because Iraq was buying centrifuge tubes. I mean because they were buying yellowcake. I mean because we'd be greeted as liberators. I mean because we were going to fight them over there so we didn't have to fight them over here. I mean because we were going to bring them democracy. You know what, I have no idea why we went there, but I'm sure all those troops totally didn't die in vain.

Why don't you ask Hillary Clinton why we did it, she voted for it.

This makes me LOL in a very sad way...

You forgot to mention Halliburton...what's good for Halliburton is good for the country, or something like that...

Irrelevant, but nice try.

ZERO wars have been to defend the freedom of the USA since WWII.

It is just a fact and anyone in the military is getting PAID. It is their CHOSEN JOB, not drafted or forced. Any complaints about your CHOSEN JOB should go to your bosses, not the public.

Last time I checked, we the voters were their bosses. While the President and Congress have the primary and secondary control, aren't we the ones who decide who the President and Congress will be?

Dear aging veteran,

These wars are not meant to be won. Nor are they about freedom, democracy or any of those other tired old propaganda slogans.

And you have only yourself to blame for your sense of betrayal. For you can't be betrayed unless you act on the lies.

- happy new year

Wars are about keeping the war machine going. Good news on that front another Bush is gearing up for a White House run. There are still a few countries left to conquer.

EXACTLY.

I grew up in the '50s and 60's and ALL my friends fathers were WWII vets, including my own father who hit the beach on D-Day. My best friend's dad had his leg all shot up in the Battle of the Bulge. It was gross when he wore shorts, but it's amazing that he didn't lose it.

Anyway, I don't recall any of these dads ever talking about the war, not one word. My mom told me about my dad's service and showed me his citations or I wouldn't have known about it until much much later (he started talking about it when he was about 85 years old and going senile).

These guys really did fight to preserve our freedom and, as mentioned, WWII is the last war that they were in jeopardy. But when the war was won, these guys went back to civilian life. You never heard about PTSD or any of that phony shit. And World War II was more horrible than anything before or since. They call these guys the Greatest Generation for a reason.

These motherfuckers today see a little action in phony wars to protect ExxonMobil's interests and we have to "thank them for their service" every five fucking minutes or they get upset?

You "volunteer" but you're also pretty well recompensed for it. In addition to your salary, you get housing (tax free) allowance, free healthcare, and the ability to retire at age 38 at half your high pay. Not bad for a job you can go into right out of school with no skills.

Though I agree with a lot of what you said, I disagree with the owing part. We had to attack Afghanistan after 9/11. We owe thanks. But the ones who need to do the most thanking are the contractors who made a profit on the war, and the political bastards that got donations from those contractors.

Yes, after we were attacked by a bunch of Saudis who were affiliated with a philosophy held by the Taliban, who sometimes hung out in Afghanistan (and whose leader was eventually snuffed in Pakistan), I can see why we "had" to attack afhganistan...and later Iraq.

Osama and his boys were in Afghanistan. We had to get them. They weren't in Saudi Arabia. You can't let that slide. Iraq? no, we had no business there. Boy George was just following Dickhead Cheney's orders

Thank you for your service.

I am old enough to remember the first Iraq war. Clear goal: Push Iraq out of Kuwait. We did it. Didn't declare victory until the mission was complete.

Victory means defeating the enemy. Unconditional surrender by them. Wish we had committed to Afghanistan and the second Iraq war under these terms and didn't pull out early.

There is never satisfaction in pulling out early. Everyone knows that.

Attention Service members:

It's official. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 includes a 1 percent across-the-board base pay raise for 2015. This means an additional $15 to $197 per month depending on rank and length of service. In addition, new rates have been set for BAH and COLA.

The official story, I always question official stories, was that the top brass and poppa bush called a halt to the invasion because we were so overpowering, and so many Iraqi military were deserting and dying, that they felt like it was becoming a massacre and had to stop.

Need to work on your comprehension skill there Slick. You whined about the excuses for going into Iraq. The response was to ask Hillary, who voted to authorize the war. Simple enough it would seem.

The real reason was that, in response to 9/11, Bush and his neo-statists decided the way to address radical Islam was to do what the US did in WWII, e.g. establish democracies in the region. The only real democracy in the ME is Israel, a US ally. Very naive in hindsight.

Iraq made a perfect foil for this. Bush hated them for trying to kill his father. They had large oil reserves, so they wouldn't be a burden to rebuild and could be self sufficent. They shared a large border with Iran, who the US was fighting a cold war. If the US could get Afghanistan worked out, the US would have Iran boxed in with US allies surrounding it. Plus, Iraq was a pariah nation at the time, dislike and distrusted by most of the UN and they were shooting at UN-sanctioned planes enforcing the no-fly zone.

Thus, Bush and his neo-statists expanded the war on terror to turn Iraq into a US-allied democracy.

That's the reason we went to war in Iraq. It failed. Bush ran a terrible war. Obama ran a terrible withdraw.

So, in a sense, it was about defending America, but it was a theoretical solution to a nebulous threat. All in all, a bad move. But that's all 20/20 hindsight now ain't it?

Still irrelevant.

Nice try though, I never mentioned Hillary, Iraq or Bush - that is all your silliness.

My point stands and is factual, just deal with the reality.

WWII has as little to do with American freedom as Iraq. In fact, the only recent war that had anything to o with our freedom--the cold war against communism--we lost.
