I know none of the fire stations use them anymore, but are there any still up and mounted?

Who the fuck cares about something like this so god damn early in the morning? Yes I'm grouchy and your question is idiotic. Why don't you Google it or call around and ask?!

I think they were air raid sirens from back during the Cold War. There were at fire houses and schools, etc.

I remember hearing them regularly in the 50's and 60's. I don't know if any are still around, but I'll start looking. I remember what they looked like---they were up on poles with square horns and they revolved. Damned loud, they were!

I don't think there are any still around. the only possibilities would be Station 17 in Centreville, Station 16 in Clifton or Station 19 in Lorton. All of the other volunteer stations that may have had them have been completely rebuilt. I don't think they have been used since the early 60's.

I think Fairfax County went to electronic tone alerting in 1958, and began the phase out of sirens then.

Growing up in Fairfax County In the early eighties we still had them in my elementary school and we'd have drills where we had to get under our desks.

I remember hearing Vienna and Dunn Loring VFD alert sirens. Each siren was distinct. When they both went off, you'd hear a bunch of fire truck sirens and the sound of Co. 2's Maxims soon after.

There used to be one at Burke School at the corner of Burke Lake Road and Burke Centre Parkway back in the 80's. It used to go off from time to time. I'm sure they're all gone by now.

These were not Fire Sirens, these were the yellow Civil Defense Air Raid sirens that used to test at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. every Wednesday as I recall.

Oh yeah. Duck and Cover! I remember those drills in the late 50's, early 60's.

Like getting under a desk is going to help you in a nuclear attack, LOL. Especially around here with the bulls eye just a few miles away.

I remember they had backyard bomb shelters for sale in the A&P parking lot in Annandale. My dad was involved in nuclear energy and he always said, "You DO NOT want to survive the initial blast!".

The last one I remember seeing was at #8 in Annandale on Columbia Pike.

A circle of smaller horns pointing out from the top of a pole.Definately not one of the civil defense sirens.

I remember one at little run school. We'd hear the sirens , but we had no drills for the kids at my school from early 70's onward. But the sound sure carried far. I tell you what, duck and cover was the wrong thing. It should have been, stick your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye, cuz if duck and cover saves you, than you gonna die soon from radiation. I'd rather vaporize.

Lake Braddock Secondary and Laurel Ridge had them as late as 1985. As for Fire Department, Penn Daw and Jefferson are also old buildings and may have had them back in the day.

Yes! I think at least one still stands! Top of seven corners. As you come up sleepy hollow rd and turn right on castle, look to your right. Just past the first building on your right on castle and across the small parling lot you will see the overgrown tower that is behind the fire house. Siren is gone but the tower remains. Am i right? Not sure if civil defense but think it was. Another was at the complete opposite end of sleepy hllow at columbia pike near belvedere school in the park now at the corner of sleepy hollow and columbia pike. It was indeed civil degense and went off once a week or once a month at a set time. Really loud!

Fairhill ES in Fairfax had one in the early '70's. They would test it every Wed at 11:00
