Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
anyone noticed that the raccoons are really fat this year?
(especially those in the northern parts of the county, such
as Vienna, Great Falls, Reston, etc...)
There are TONS of beavers around here, so maybe it was a beaver.
Fox Mill Estates had an awesome beaver dam that was done away with when drainage needs for the FFX Parkway required it. The beavers had blocked this creek and created a swamp-type area that was quite large and very fascinating. Most of the large trees had fallen over from lack of ground support for the roots or from the beavers, or course. This are could only be reached, at the time, by a long walk through the woods and it was a very cool place to have waiting after the trip.
The coolest thing was the little hut that I perceived to be the beaver den.. the beavers had made a little house out of mud and timbers, and it was almost impossible to get to unless you swam out to it. I threw a large rock at it and it bounced right off. I wish my condo was built so solid.

You probably saw a groundhog. They love to eat garden vegetables. I've seen them all over our county.
