SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Shoppers began lining up outside the newly reinvented Springfield Town Center hours before the grand opening Friday morning eager to see what replaced the retail hub once known as the Springfield Mall.

A more than $250 million reconstruction transformed the old mall into a new shopping destination. The mall has opened in time for the holiday shopping season to get underway. The town center offers valet parking seven days a week, which came in handy Friday as the parking lot was packed.

Gary Cantrell, who was among those lining up at 4 a.m., says the old mall was a huge part of his life.

"I had my first date here, I met my friends here," he says. And he's looking forward to making new memories at the new town center.

Giving his first impression of the new shopping mall he says, "It's very elegant, lots of chandeliers."

Amie Jordan, who works across the street from the new town center, stopped by during her lunch break to check it out.

"I love it, great new stores, Dave and Buster's coming, Maggiano's, more restaurants," she says.

The town center's General Manger Eric Christensen says the center's retail space is about 80 percent occupied and the center will be as much as 90 percent full by next year.

Among the changes shoppers will see at the new town center:

Food court with indoor/outdoor patio and fireplace
Children's play area with library of books, puzzles and games New 12-screen Regal Cinema
Phone charging stations
Among the stores that have leases at Springfield Town Center:

&PIZZA
AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS
YARD HOUSE
CHIPOTLE
CHUY'S
DICK'S SPORTING GOODS
H&M
J.CREW
MAGGIANO'S LITTLE ITALY
NANDO'S PERI-PERI*
NORDSTROM RACK
REGAL CINEMA
TEAVANA
TOPSHOP
WHITE HOUSE/BLACK MARKET
WOOD RANCH BBQ & GRILL*

What's the percentage of blank, white walls? Or are the vacant spaces dressed up somehow?

LOL. I know. Springfield is so fucked that when the open-air, town center concept failed, they were too stupid to fix the name and the sign.

"We'll call it a town center and maybe nobody will notice or question it!"

It does. More specifically it looks like Springfield Mall. Just cleaned it up a little. Really not much different. Looks better than the last time that I was there before it closed but the new is going to rub off fast I think.

Just back myself. Agree completely with above. It's a mall. What the heck else are you going to do? Aisles with stores on each side. The center section is nice, big staircase and all nice and clean. Let's see how long that will last. Cops all over the place. Good. Biggest problem was getting in and out the way they have all the streets torn up. LOTS of vacant store areas, many saying something like coming spring of 2015. A very diverse crowd, I mean very diverse, but maybe that's just because it is new and it is a weekend. Give it time to settle in.

Why can't stupids like you read before posting dumb posts? They already said many times that this is just the first phase and yeah the fixed all the signs. All the signs say Springfield town center. I hope your obviously dyslexic ass can read that somehow.

How much did they spend refinishing the mall? Looks like a $2 a $3 million job. Not a whole lot of change.

Hahahahaha, funny. Good one, you're so smart. Did you go to school to be a comedian? Is that Jim Crow era comedy? They don't tell Em like they used to.

The guy is right though. That place was a crime haven for thugs and immigrants.

What affluent citizens or white people from Northern Virginia will go shop at this mall after the initial opening? It's not like it's Tysons II where we have assholes from even MD coming to rape the mall.

Gerryloser is no doubt hanging out at the mall hoping to get aSS-raped.

They could have least included a Britches of Georgetown and a Fantastic Fritzbees Flying Food Factory. I'll pass, thank you very much.

What is with the negativity directed at Springfield Town Center? There are people who are posting one star reviews on Yelp. Why is it so bad that they reopen the mall? It looks great, they managed to get some good stores. Yet there are still people who are saying that it is diverse... yes, it is Northern Virginia after all. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there were people working in the interest of Tysons Corner who are posting these negative comments on all the news websites. One popular comment I see is "Lipstick on a pig". Its a little bit more than just a paint job. They completely retenanted the mall. A lot of people want STC to succeed; I am disappointed that there are people here in Fairfax County that actually want it to fail. This is where you live.

Diversity does not mean crime and violence. Its Northern Virginia, of course it is going to be diverse. Do you only see white people at Tysons Corner?

Except for Target.

And Macy's.

And JC Penney.

And Dicks.

Kay Jewelers.

Foot Locker.

etc., etc...

Even where it's different it's still basically all of the same old mall stores.

After visiting, I honestly can't figure out why they gutted the place. It really doesn't look all that different. And the tenants aren't all that different than they were about 15 years ago.

I wish HTO had come back.

Went to the movies there today. The theaters are beautiful. Assigned seats. Seats are like Barcoloungers. Press the button and the backs recline and the foot rest comes up. Even has a tray that comes across to hold your eats. Outside there is a small bar area. I guess you can take your beer into the theater. The sound was fantastic. A very good experience. More of a pain in the ass to get to than Kingstown, but well worth the trouble. From what I've seen - the rest of the mall is pretty much just a mall.

Some of the negative comments are the usual FFXU commentary, but the problem is that this project was billed for years as a complete redesign of the old mall as a central part of the revitalization of Springfield. Instead, the economy sadly want south as those plans were being made and the redevelopment was scaled back to a renovation of the old place. Nicer and cleaner -- yes. Some nicer stores -- yes. A game-changer? Probably not. When I was looking at the store directory at the Town Center (cough, cough, mall) today, there was a middle age couple standing next to me also looking at the directory. The wife said to the husband, "I'm a little disappointed. How about you?" He replied, "Eh, it's a mall." I want the place to succeed and for it to help revitalize Springfield, which in many ways time has passed by. It's better than the old place and it's good to have the option of going there for specific stores I may want to visit to get something I need, but I don't see it as a place to just go spend some time walking the mall in the same way I still do every once in a while at Tysons or Pentagon City -- because those stores have more places that carry clothes and other stuff I may want to buy. Hopefully, the FBI will relocate to the old warehouse site nearby and I do think that will help the mall attract and sustain better merchants.

Stick a fork in it, it's done.

Nothing will bring it back the Mall Concept is dead especially with an area with demos like that.

Speaking as a five foot tall female who worked in the mall til 10 or 11pm at night when I was in college for YEARS i never had any fear nor saw any crime my time there and I was never scared. Every mall is dangerous and the people who seem to post on here seem to be just jealous! That's all it comes down to is J E A L O U S Y! Because your COMMON SENSE if you have any will tell you that Springfield mall is the same distance to franconia and kingstowne and Alexandria (meaning high earning people of all colors) not just the other part of springfield which is hispanics. So stop being jealous and instead of being jealous do something to YOUR community.

Working at the mall til a few years ago when i was in school I received constant updates. The redesign was never meant to change anchor stores only in between the mall and that is what happened and they stuck to the plan. At the opening of the mall it was said by the owners that this was just phase one of the revitilization. It's a great thing for fairfax county's economy overall and I don't understand the people who are being sour about it. They are being stupid lacking common sense.
