VDOT Plowmen already parked on shoulders at Noon today??????
Posted by: Highway Robbery ()
Date: March 13, 2017 04:05PM

I came home from work early today just because I know it will be a cluster fuck later today even if there is no sign of a flake of snow. Much to my surprise, at 12:30 I saw at least 5 VDOT snowplows/sand contractors parked on the shoulder of 66 and 29, truck idling, driver snoozing away.

Please tell me these criminals don't start getting paid until they actually DO SOMETHING???????

If the forecast keeps changing, they may be sitting all night in the rain!

I'm pretty sure they get paid from the time they pull out of their driveway until they get back home and crawl into bed.

This is VDOTs answer to being prepared. Paying people to sleep all day in their trucks to save 10 minutes to get to their assigned routes.

I'very been driving a VDOT plow for 37 years now. We don't get paid until either the blade drops or the spreader gets turned on. Positioning trucks in advance of the storm helps reduce the storm's impact on the roads once precipitation starts to fall, which helps keep all the motorists who insist on being out on the roads despite the fact that they have been told to stay off the roads. It's hard to operate snow removal equipment properly with all of the bro-dozers with AWD/4WD driving 20mph over the limit and all of the late model Camrys with a dent on the rear bumper and bald tires.

Untrue. First of all your story is BS. VDOT uses independent contractors for snow removal now almost exclusively. You would be hard pressed to find a VDOT truck with a plow on it. In addition, these guys are on a contract. As soon as they get in the their truck, they are getting paid. You think these rednecks are going to go out and sit on the side of the road for 8-10 hours and not get paid? LOLOLOLOLOLOL!

Go back in your hole troll.

You really need to get out more. VDOT plows the major roads. Don't be or become an asswipe.

plow drivers get paid "stand-by" time while they're waiting to plow snow. when they start spreading sand/salt or plowing they get paid "push" time and the rate increases significantly.

Yes VDOT has plows but I am guessing 75-85% of what you see are contractors. These guys line up 6-10 hours ahead of any snow coming down. There is no way in hell they aren't getting paid during this time. Further, if a VDOT employee is in a VDOat vehicle sitting around .. they are getting paid too. No way anyone is volunteering 8 hours of their day.

Went by my local VDOT office and this is what they told me. This snow event there are 2300 pieces of equipment on hand. There is no way in hell you can load 2/3rds of that in one or two hours plus have them go and get t their staging areas. They gate paid standby time and push time. The private contractors time start when he checks in at the office and someone confirms that there equipment is ready to work. That is all.

on after thought it was maybe fair ...

area weather could have been construed as "freezing slush on road ice and cold enough to keep roads frozen the next day"

however don't believe that too quickly

#1 they know the soil isn't warm enough to keep roads frozen for long (lotta warm days proceeding)

#2 OUT OF AREA predictions predicted rain and snow and ABOVE FREEZING TEMPERATURES, while local predictions predict below

however ... our local predictors are tied in with the money of road maintenance so ... can you really believe them ?

I, too, was bothered by the hundreds of parked plows. This means hundreds of thousands of dollars to be paid by Fairfax County taxpayers.

At the same time, the Liberal/Progressive controlled weather channels declared that EVERYBODY TAKE COVER, THIS IS THE BIG ONE, AL GORE WAS RIGHT, GLOBAL WARMING/COOLING/CHANGE IS REAL.

We need a Trump to take over the Fairfax County government, and kick out the stupid-assed people in charge who listened to the Democrat-controlled weather channels.

I learned yesterday, at 3 p.m., that Fairfax County would get about 3 inches of snow, mostly slush, that would freeze. Rain, snow, rain, snow.

And the ones calling for 6 inches plus are the same ones who say that "science" has proven global warming (or global climate change, depending on the intellect of the idiot arguing with you.)

Fairfax County wasted a tremendous amount of money due to Democrat bullshit.

Yeah, too many plows.

Walk to work. Great idea!

And if you're on medical disability, you can just roll yourself to the doc.

Shee-it! If you're retired, unemployed or incarcerated, you can just idly watch & count the pedestrians who fall down (that'll be some laughs).

When they sue the county for damages, you can just post some more pith & vinegar about how the county oughta have more snow plows and have more Arthur Treacher's Hush Puppies at Fox News & Sameer's place.

What a bunch of whack-a-moles!! You're fun!!
