I am amazed at the comments made on this series of posts.Ignorance is alive and well in Fairfax County. Lynbrook ES is a Title 1 school that happends to have an Autism program. Yes, some students in the Autism program are non-verbal but most speak just as well as the kids in my own neighborhood.
If you just took the time and looked at the school's demographics page, you would find that the students in this school come in all colors and nationalities. Poor pass rate on the SOL's, well you are right about that one. This is most certainly not from a lack of effort by the staff. I challenge you to come and watch for a day and see how hard working the teachers are this school. How can you expect students who are not native English speakers and have often not attended school in the US for their entire academic career to perform well on the SOL's. Have you ever taken a look at the SOL exams? While they may not seem hard to you, imagine not understanding the language and/or the material and being expected to do well. The tests are cumulative, covering more than two to three years of teaching in to one test. Just check out the VDOE website and see how well you would do, particularly if the tests were given in a language you were still learning.
If you took the time to really look around the school, you would find students who walk in the hall calmly and quietly, with and without their teachers watching. ESOL students, you bet! Students come to Lynbrook not speaking English, but often have been educated in their own countries and not only are learning English but also curriculum for their grade level. Most of the comments above make these kids sound like crazed or wild children who have never been in a school or had any type of education before.
Yes, Lynbrook Es is the home of the Leprechauns and this school is full of leprechaun magic, luck and good spirit, too bad many of those who chose to comment negatively to the original post are not.
