Yes, but that was part of the charm. Sonny would spend half the broadcast either poking fun at or trying to unravel Sam's many malaprops. Sam was definately a throwback -- to the era before football players wore helmets.
There was one expression he used now and then that I occasionally work into conversation after hearing it. Being the good ol' West By God Virginia boy that he is, he would sometimes say when one player totally dominated another, "He beat him like a rented mule".
