You must never eat in Fairfax City, Vienna, Herndon, Manassas, Manassas Park, Falls Church City, Alexandria City, or anywhere in Arlington or DC. All those places have meals taxes. Fairfax County does not. But should.

Remarkably, liberals think hard-working people should pay high income taxes, high taxes on their property and their house, and, in Fairfax, 10% on every meal residents eat outside their home. It's because liberals believe that the world will be a better place if they spend people's money, instead of the people who earn it. It seems more reasonable to believe that the people who work hard for the money will be better stewards of how it is spent.

The OP must be a visitor. The meals tax only affects visitors. Many people have told me this again and again so it must be true. Why is someone who isn't a fairfax resident posting on FU?

Home-schooled or something? The meals tax is added to all checks for covered items at all covered establishments in each meals-taxing jurisdiction. The identity of the diner/customer doesn't enter into it.

I make so much money I could afford to cover the tab for everyone in the restaurant. But instead I keep it. Fuck you bitch.

in the 90's eating out costed:

$3-$5 mcdonalds or small place
$6-$8 deli, lunch cafeteria, overprice franchise
many nice small restraunts in this range
$8-$15 very nice restraunt, suit & tie
$16 + the more expensive items at suit&tie
$20-$30 had wine and desert at suit&tie
$100+ french restraunt, ordered steak w/o prices shown

The concept of giving something back to the community and to society is strong at these income levels. When it comes to tipping, the top 1% know that dickheads and stupid goober assholes like you are stiffing wait staff left and right, so they tend to leave tips of 25%, 30%, and more in hopes of making up for at least some part of your criminal social insufferability.

$16 is allot for a meal - most people in fx in the 80's wouldn't see that but a few times in their LIFE

$buffet were always more expensive, like $8 to $15, and at $8 buffet would complain if a customer ate too much food or threw away food and didn't keep doors open long

i mean like $9 - $12 for buffet, $16 is expensive - it shows inflation big time

fx co should charge a meal tax at high end restraunt but far as i know they don't (ie, not a poor tax on poor - that gov is famous for finding ways to hit the poor harder)

The Fairfax meals tax white paper addressed this concern. While it is added to all checks, it targets visitors to the county. Locals don't eat out at local eateries. According to the white paper:

"...it is estimated that
between 26 and 31 percent of
meals expenditures in Fairfax
County are generated by non-
County residents..."

So you can clearly see that a meals tax doesn't target locals.

It isn't a concern, it's a fact. F-A-C-T. The residence of a particular customer or diner will have no bearing at all on whether he will pay the prevailing tax.

Right. These are commuters, tourists, and business travelers who end up dining in Fairfax County while actually residing someplace else. Good way to get new revenue into the County without having to ding actual County residents for it. But the remaining 69 to 74 percent (to use the same figures) of expenditures are ade by people who DO live in the County. Namely any who dine in a restaurant or other covered establishment that is in a meals-tax imposing jurisdiction. Don't want to pay? Fine...stay home and open another can of Beefaroni.
