They're still disappointed when their teams lose, of course, but since they hadn't been thinking "Championship Baby!!!!" since before the season started, it's somewhat easier for them to take.

So the question is what causes DC-area sports douchiness. Something in the water? Perhaps, but I think it's just the culture, and it has become self-reinforcing. Everything from the way the teams are promoted, to the local TV/radio announcers (Sonny, LOL), the local sportscasters, even the stadium announcers -- it's all douchiness to the max. I wish a sociologist would write a paper on it. It would be fascinating. :-)

Baseball is the only American sport about which there is a significant literature. The depth and complexity of the game is the reason why. We have NASCAR and the NFL for those who can't reach the top shelf.
