It looks like it regularly peaks in June/July.
With the peak enterovirus season approaching, hospitals in Taipei City reported 506 new cases last week, bringing the total for the year to 4,214 as of June 19.
The Department of Health under the city government said based on figures for the past two years, the enterovirus season would reach its peak in the next one or two weeks.
Ou Chia-ling, deputy head of disease control section under the Taipei DOH, said the enterovirus season began heating up last month, with the number of cases continually rising from around 200 in the first week to eventually surpass the 500-mark last week. However, the number of serious cases in Taipei City has remained at just one.
Ou said the peak of the enterovirus season last year was in the 27th week, with a total of 176 cases being reported that week. During the last serious outbreak in 2008, there were 625 cases reported during the high point in the 26th week of the year.
In previous years, the number of new enterovirus cases began to subside near the end of June, Ou said, pointing out that this may be related to the start of the summer vacation for students. With fewer occasions where youngsters are gathered in large numbers, the virus has less of a chance to spread, she explained.
However, there is usually another upsurge when classes begin again in September, so health authorities need to continue observing the situation, she noted.
