RICHMOND, Va. (WJLA) – In what’s expected to be a relatively sensational affair that’s expected to last at least a month, the corruption trial of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, begins Monday.
Here’s a look at some of the key players, dates and other information about the trial.
THE INDICTMENT
Both McDonnells are charged with:
• Conspiracy to commit honest-services wire fraud (one count).
• Honest-services wire fraud (three counts).
• Conspiracy to obtain property under color of official right (one count).
• Obtaining property under color of official right (six counts).
• Making false statements to a federal credit union (one count).
Bob McDonnell also is charged with:
• Making a false statement to a financial institution (one count).
Maureen McDonnell also is charged with:
• Obstruction of an official proceeding (one count).
KEY PLAYERS
• Jonnie R. Williams Sr. -- He’s the Richmond-area businessman whose “gifts” to the McDonnells, allegedly to boost one of his companies, Star Scientific, ultimately led to an investigation and then the federal charges.
• Bob McDonnell – Served as the state’s 71st governor from 2010-2014.
• Maureen McDonnell – The former governor’s wife since 1976.
• U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer – Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

• August 2011: Maureen McDonnell organizes a luncheon at the Executive Mansion where one of Star Scientific’s products, Anatabloc, is at every table setting. The governor also is on hand.
• January 2014: Bob and Maureen McDonnell are indicted.
