Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) will appear in Arlington next week at a pair of events meant to introduce the likely GOP presidential contender to business leaders and grass-roots activists in the swing state of Virginia.

Paul will headline a business roundtable at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Le Meridien Arlington. An hour later, he will mix with young professionals at Arlington Rooftop Bar and Grill.

Both events are free and were quickly oversubscribed after invitations went out, organizers said. The young professionals event was originally planned for a smaller venue but was moved to Arlington Rooftop when more than 200 people — more than twice the number expected — signed up.

“Senator Paul is one of the most intriguing, exciting leaders we have in the party, and I know a lot of Virginians want to know more,” said Pete Snyder, a Northern Virginia technology entrepreneur who helped organize the events. “It’s a great opportunity to meet him up close and personal and squeeze the Charmin.”

Snyder, who last year sought the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor, planned the events at Paul’s request along with Ken Cuccinelli II, the former Republican state attorney general who narrowly lost last fall’s governor’s race to Terry McAuliffe (D).

Snyder said that neither he nor Cuccinelli was formally endorsing Paul, saying it was too early. But Snyder said they were both happy to introduce him to business leaders and grass-roots activists.

Cuccinelli declined to comment. The former attorney general is lead counsel on a lawsuit Paul has filed against President Obama and members of his administration over the National Security Agency’s collection of phone data.
