We are moving up from Florida and we wanted to know are their alot of developments w/ retention ponds. Practically every development in Florida has them and our experience w/ them has not been good.

Within 10 miles of the Beltway most ponds are underground. We try to be civilized around here.

Not nearly as many. Some in areas but they're more for heavy storms and don't stay full.

Most around here goes to larger control lakes versus smaller ponds everywhere.

Easily avoided if you don't want to be near.

There are more detention ponds than retention ponds.

As was said, most ponds here are detention, meaning they stay temporarirly full.

There used to be one near my house but they drained it and put a concrete channel along the bottom, so it only fills up when it really rains hard.

My guess is the don't need them as much here because it's nowhere near flat as Florida and the water probably drains quicker.

We have one by our house. It's a detention pond, but it's much more natural looking and drains very quickly. It's a great place to see deer, foxes and other critters.

I don't care if they are called detention or retention, they are a great place to breed, sing and exist!

Considering Florida is a swamp... I think your analysis is void.

As long as this area has 100K millionaires, there will be ponds here. You yuppie and buppie faggots want lake front property, yet you cant afford it so you have to settle for a ditch full of brown water.

PATHETIC

I understand there is a problem in Florida with Gators jumping out of retention ponds and eating dogs and cats. Up here in Virginia we don't have the issue of Gators preying on domestic dogs and cats.

Here in Virginia we have something worse - Koreans

that's not cool is a big danger in a public place

heat is the bitch engineers never fucking get it right - ie, space shuttle o-rings etc....

===================

that looks cool but it's the bitch

because it's attatched to the gas lines , it needs to be shut off if somehow ventillation - which prevents heat accumulation - it shut off

but such a mechanims that's reliable DOES NOT EXIST and is not installed

it is a nice idea but is a bomb in public waiting to happen

a home furnace has two fans always running or the unit shuts off - just one of many safety features. what do i bet ^^^ genuis doesn't have redundant heat/gas dissipation ?

and that's excluding other important issues: gas pressure, wiring, co2

Retention ponds in Fairfax County are for Stormwater management. Most are just temporarily filled with water during major/extended rainfall events, or occasional tropical storms. Some are dammed up ponds that also provide recreational boating/fishing opportunities.

Having a population of 1.1M with run-off going into the Potomac River and unhealthy Chesapeake Bay, Fairfax County comes under considerable scrutiny for compliance with federal and state laws and permits for Stormwater runoff. The elected local officials have provided extra funding to address Stormwater management needs in FFX county -- including the temporary retention ponds.

The post below is accurate except for one point. The elected officials previously increased taxes to pay for stormwater management across the County. Some refer to that as a rain tax. Others believe that it truly supports effective stormwater management for a large urban area that helps the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.

Don't buy a house that is next to a pond or lake on the sale level with a basement below water table level. Every time the pond fills up you'll have a water issue in the basement.
