Gasoline prices in Virginia increase by 3 cents per gallon
http://www.wjla.com/articles/2014/06/gasoline-prices-in-virginia-increase-by-3-cents-per-gallon-104380.html#ixzz35TV4K5dZ

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia gasoline prices have inched up by an average of 3 cents per gallon in the last week.

AAA Mid-Atlantic reports that the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in the state was $3.48 Sunday. That's up from $3.45 a week ago and 7 cents higher than the $3.41 Virginia motorists were paying a year ago.

The good news for Virginians is that it's 20 cents below the national average.

Average prices range from $3.36 in Roanoke to $3.56 in the Norfolk area. Motorists are paying $3.43 in Richmond and $3.39 in Charlottesville.

The rumor is oil companies will try for 50 cents increase by August.

Seriously they could probably charge $6 and Americans would still pay it. In Europe gas is $8 a gallon.

The only way to avoid the oil barons raping you every summer is to go electric or hybrid.

A Tesla gets 360 miles on a charge, nice luxury car and FAST. The average commute to DC is 20 miles.

That's 18 trips(or two weeks) in an out of DC on a charge. Plus just plug it in in your garage to refuel for pennies.

Let's do some quick math...I recently purchased a 2012 4 cylinder FWD Chevy Equinox for around $20K. The car gets 24MPG in mixed driving and I drive about 15000 miles per year. At $4 per gallon for regular my fuel cost is $2500. Yes, not a Tesla, but over 5 years gas would need to be well over $10 per gallon to even come remotely close to breaking even.

You don't buy a Tesla because you want to save on gas.

The average Tesla also costs about $70K. Plus another $3-5K for a home charging station. That's a shit load of gallons of gas.

Tesla prices will come down eventually as they convert from their custom built past to a more frequent inventory (see Tesla dealerships popping up including the new one in Tysons). In the mean time, you dont have to buy a tesla, there are cheaper electric cars or electric/gas hybrids that for 99% of the time will also have a no gas budget. Personally I think the Nissan Leaf is overlooked, its in the high 30s, has a good range, decent charge time, although no gas back up.

If electric cars can consistently get in that price market, while having the style of Tesla or Fisker, then I imagine they will be here to stay, and at $4 to 5 per gallon, the bigger companies will invest more effort into that market as well.

15000 mile commute x $4 per gallon / avg 21 mpg = ~$2850 per year or ~$30,000 on life cycle

15000 mile commute x $4 per gallon / avg 45 mpg (hybrid) = $1330 per year or ~$15,000 on life cycle

Most hybrids have a $3000 up sell also on gas equivalents. I think the high 30s to even mid 40s make it economically work out better with gas at or above $4.

YOu forget Tesla are virtually maintenance free. No oil changes or anti-freeze changes needed.

The is also no transmission in a Tesla so their's no transmission maintenance needed either.

You'll easily pay $5,000 over the life of gas in maintenance and an additional $30,000 in gas over a Tesla.

By the way... who the hell buy a car that only get 24mpg these days? That's just throwing money out the window of your car.

No but they have a bunch of VERY expensive batteries which dont last forever. In fact, no one knows how long they will last yet because it's all new technology.

Its not that new. Battery life is under warranty for 120k miles. So either way, up to that point you wont have to pay for it to be replaced. I would say between lack of transmission, but having the battery replacement, you are looking at the same general maintenance costs. I own a hybrid, had to switch out the battery on one cell, cost about $1200. Not bad considering it has 140k miles on it. Its not as big of an issue as some would have you believe, especially since that hybrid has saved my over $4500 on gas compared to the non-hybrid version, let alone a lower MPG car.

Forgot to mention that my hybrid itself has only 3 cells, so that $1200 cost is about 1/3 of total cost if all hell were to break loose. Talking to the mechanic he said they usually only have to replace 1 cell at a time and most of the time the issues don't start until around 120k like mine. Driven 20k on it since and no issues with the other 2 cells. I figure if it gets to 150k its gravy, about as good as any general sedan in the low 20s will get you now and days anyways. Anything above that is just icing. I think the era of 200k cars is done for the most part, they don't build them like that anymore except for pick ups.

Panic!!!! Your cost to fill up will be about 45 cents more a week! I know, you could go to 7-11 and buy your coffee for .99 instead of starbucks for $5.25

Hybrid vs getting a job that pays well enough to afford gas on anormal car...Hummm..........No contest
Get a real job and stop whining

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the entire subject.

People cry about pennies on the dollar for gas, but look at what they pay for 5hr energy drinks, starbucks, and everything else. Fucking blind idiots.

Normally the gas prices go down after Memorial Day, I've noticed this year they really didn't except for a few stations. Why is that you think?

You will never pay back the difference in purchase price between that and a gas Accord. Factor in the damage to the world those batteries cause and the fact that they take more energy to produce then they will ever save. It just does not make economic sense. Like most speciality cars, they are cool though.

Are YOU the brains behind that rumor? Have you ever noticed that gas prices always tend to increase during vacation driving periods? Like summer?

What was the consumer response when gas prices shot above a mere $4 per gallon in the summer of 2008?

> In Europe gas is $8 a gallon.

That's because of the heavy taxes so sensibly applied in Europe. The actual pre-tax price of gas is about the same there as here. Meanwhile, their governments are hauling in bucketloads of money, and much of the euro-fleet gets an MPG that is higher enough than ours to mean that a euro-driver pays very little more per actual mile driven than a US driver does. They are not doing as well as we are with pollution, but they are otherwise pretty much beating our pants off.

Helpful in the current environment, but electricity comes to you principally through the courtesy of the coal and natural gas barons.
