What's the deal with Micro Center in Vienna?
Posted by: Unhappy Shopper ()

What’s the deal with Microcenter all of a sudden? I went there yesterday with my wife and kid to pick up an external hard drive and those clerks were all over me. I’m white, and my wife is an islander (dark tan). (they asked me 10 times if I wanted help. They asked her only twice). Seems like they were prejudiced against my wife who was interested in buying a new digital camera upwards of $500 to $700, but because of their attitude we decided to go elsewhere. We’ve been in there many times before, what’s changed with that attitude? The clerks are all mixed (white, black, Hispanic, Asian, etc.) and I was dressed like a total redneck bum. Surely they didn’t think I had money.

Racism? Elitists? WTF!?!

If you walk around like you're lost they will attack you. Go right the spot of the product you want. Then when somebody says can I help you answer yes.

If you walk around the store for a couple of hours you'll get about 10 different people asking you if need help.

Has to be my favorite store. I love the section on the right with all the drives and massive computers fans, liquid coolants and wacky light effects.

You can avoid the smothering salespeople by turning to on-line outlets like Tiger Direct. About everything you could dream of is out there somewhere...

I noticed the same thing. I used to love that store because I could go in there and look for all the stuff I wanted to get eventually and get an idea of how much I would have to save up to eventually get it, or compare prices and brands of the stuff I could get right then. I always love to look at what they have for when I might want to upgrade to a better piece of equipment. Half of the fun is wandering around in wonder looking at all the goodies they have in there!
But, the last two times I went there this spring I felt like I was in one of those restaurants that can only make their money by the imposed rule of time limits, ie., fast turnover of tables--get the people in and out as fast as you can to get more in and out as fast as they can go. The ones who "attacked" me with overburdens of attention insisted in putting their little chips of paper--or else these had RFID chips in them --on the stuff I was going to buy as fast as I could take my selections off the shelf, and that is an indication that (a) They are experiencing a high theft rate and the "clerks" are really security people marking all that you buy as you pick it off the shelf; (2) The clerks get paid by getting kickbacks off each thing you buy, so that they have to mark each one with their own piddle-paper before someone else (competing with them) steals you and your attention--and their sales bonus-- away; (3) They don't want anyone spending any longer than the time it takes to complete the sale hanging around their store due to the homeless and street people outside trying to use it as a hangout to beg their "rich" patrons for money.
I enjoyed shopping there for things and will spend a lot more in stores when given the freedom to take my good old time to browse, but I find myself rarely going there now due to that hurried "harrassment overkill" unless I really need something in a hurry. You are right, if you know what you want, Tiger Direct is great, but some things I like to be able to see and check out the design before I buy it.

It probably is more a reflection of gender bias than racial bias.

My wife is very pretty. When we go anywhere, she gets a ton of attention from the clerks. I doubt they would even call 911 for me if I was on the floor having a heart attack. Are you cuter then your wife? If so, you might want to come out of the closet if you are gay or upgrade to Trophy Wife 2.0 to solve this problem. Boob job might help as well.

It's just loss prevention. They do the same thing at Best Buy and at Target. People in general are less likely to steal if all the employees are attentive and alert.

Still, Micro Center employees do have shitty attitudes, it's probably because they make $8 - 12 an hour in one of the most expensive areas in the country.

Is the commission thing newish? While I've always felt the employees did ask to help a lot, I don't remember them claiming items with little sticky notes until somewhat recently.

I don't really care though, I go in with my bluetooth headphones on and say just browsing to anyone who tries to talk to me. Unless of course I actually need help with something.

Clearly you're an out-of-touch dillhole with no concept of just how quick Amazon and Newegg ship. Do some fucking research and you'll know things ship very quickly here in NoVa.

op you're a whiney bitch.

if you dont like the prompt attentive service the salesman give you then order online and pick it up in an hour later. no standing in check out lines, no salesman comission hounding, no fuss no muss. microcenters website has an excellent inventory integration so you know what is at the store and dont need to wait for items to come in.

No thanks, next time I'll just start punching the salesmen out. That's more fun anyway.

No the Republicans. If I was a Democrat, I would have laid down and let everyone walk all over me and call that a "Victory".

I doubt it was her color, it's gender. I think the clerks assume that women are there only to support their boyfriends/husbands as they take care of all of our high tech needs that we have no clue how to do. The techs probably get waved off many times by women who state what I just did.

I'm not an expert, but I have learned how to maintain and upgrade computers and laptops. I happen to also be female. I do go to Micro Center for memory and various other things if I don't want to wait for an online order. I typically get asked if I need help a couple of times though I usually already know what I'm there for anyway. The only help I have asked for is where something is if I do not see it on the shelf.

on several visits to MC I have picked up the items I found without any assistance only to have a pushy salesperson ask me if I needed help and when I say "No" they still ask if they can put the sticker on my items. they want to get paid for doing nothing - only go there if I need something same day - otherwise its B&H or Tiger Direct - no driving, no sales tax, no slimey salespeople

That's still pretty sexist don't you think? Following around a guy in the store while ignoring the wife? I recall seeing a study done some years ago that in most US Households, the wife controls the money of that household. You'd think that the sales guys would have been all over her.

You would think. Guess who car salespeople speak to first when a male and female couple step onto their lot.... in my experience, they didn't speak to me first. I was just the sideline female looking at the pretty colors as far as they were concerned, though I was the buyer.

The irony is, they lost a sale because of it. My wife was interested in buying a digital camera and after that experience we decided to go buy it somewhere else. One of the sales people actually interupted us while we were talking.

If Microcenter really cared and was customer-focused to the extent the OP rightly demands, they would have a system where each employee on the floor would immediately communicate a description of a customer after they ask if the customer needs help to all the other employees (wireless headset, whatever) along with the customer's answer. That way they other employees would know not to bother a customer.

Unhappy Shopper is bringing up an excellent point... the system of "Microcenter employees individually giving a crap that you may need help, and they need to ask you because they are not mind readers" is NOT an efficient system.

Agreed. The men are generally there to spend money on toys and can be upsold. And if OP came with his wife and didn't immediately identify that he's looking for something for her they're going think she's just along for the ride, which is right about 90% of the time. At least from my limited observation in places like that.
