Report: Kayaker Presumed Missing, Safe and Sound at Home in Reston

A kayaker recognized the kayak that was found and contacted authorities. Reston man had no idea there was a search going on, authorities told The Washington Post.

A kayaker whom many had feared had perished over the weekend in the rain-swollen, swirling waters of the Potomac River at Great Falls was actually home safe and sound in Reston, according to The Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/kayaker-presumed-missing-in-potomac-river-was-actually-safe-at-home-in-reston/2014/06/15/0d2bcfee-f4ac-11e3-8f20-f3a5fed7f3c4_story.html?hpid=z4

Dozens of rescuers, including officers from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, were searching the waters by boat and by helicopter all weekend.

The kayak was found Friday; on Saturday, someone recognized the kayak and contacted authorities.

When police went to the man's home in Reston and he didn't answer on Saturday, they thought he was still missing and were going to continue the search on Sunday.

After leaving a note, The Washington Post said, officers still did not hear from him. They returned Sunday, spoke to the man and called off the search. He told them he was wearing a life preserver and made it to shore and went home.

Authorities did not I.D. the kayaker.

Asshole kayaker, as you could've guessed, is a big Obama worshipper. Doesn't have any concept of personal responsibility.

I belive VA DGIF requires that you inform them within a relatively short period of time if you abandon your boat. There's a fine for failure to notify them within that time period

No registration required for kayaks.

Maybe we need background checks too.

There's not any sort of specific notice of abandonment required other than you're supposed to give them notice within 15 days if you sell it, move, it's stolen, abandoned, etc.

This could be the same "kayaker" whom shot himself in Maryland a month or two ago..

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/md-police-kayaker-may-have-made-up-story-about-being-shot-on-anne-arundel-creek/2014/06/09/798e229c-effa-11e3-bf76-447a5df6411f_story.html

A kayaker who told authorities a harrowing story about how he was shot on a Maryland creek in April and spent the night struggling to return to shore apparently made it up, police said. They now think he shot himself.

The bizarre story got even stranger last week when David Seafolk-Kopp, 56, of Reston shot himself again just before authorities served a search warrant on his home, police said. He is being investigated for giving police a false statement about the widely reported shooting on Main Creek in Pasadena.

Seafolk-Kopp met officers at the door of his home on Friday, suffering from the gunshot wound, and was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition, said Sgt. Brian Albert of the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

No different guy and there's another thread on that story.

Missing kayaker found home safe, unaware of search
http://www.wusa9.com/story/local/2014/01/01/10460057/?storyid=10460057

GREAT FALLS, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Rescue and Park Police said Sunday morning they have found a missing kayaker well and safe in Reston, Va.

A witness saw a kayaker in distress Friday afternoon and crews resumed their search on Saturday. It hadn't been confirmed that a kayaker was really missing.

Police had the kayak but there was no sign of who was in it. After speaking to the kayaker, police determined that he had experienced trouble in the water Friday afternoon and had to swim to shore, leaving the boat in the water. He did not realize that his boat had been recovered and that he was the subject of a search.

A witness reported seeing a kayaker in distress at the Observation Deck at Great Falls near the Virginia shore Friday before 2 p.m.

That witness ran to the visitor center to get help and by the time he returned, the kayaker vanished but his boat was upside down and his paddle were left floating in the water near the Angler's Inn Boat Ramp.

Donnie Simmons with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue had said, "Our assumption right now is that there is someone missing. My understanding is police can't confirm anyone is missing."

Rescuers and people experienced on the water warn the river looks peaceful but it's deceiving.

Simmons said, "it's moving fast, it's smooth but underneath, the current is treacherous. Just as we were coming here a kayaker overturned and he lost his kayak but he's was able to self- rescue and climbed out to Carderock Park."

Experts say if you plan on going out on the river have a buddy system or at least tell someone when you will return. Swimming in the Potomac is illegal.

Also put identification in your kayak to include your name and phone number.

"We hate the season to start out this way because we are out having fun every day and then you have someone who doesn't have the experience, it saddens our heart. We're hoping he's home and doesn't realize people are out looking for him and finally realize," said Greg Miller.

My thoughts exactly. What was he thinking? This could have been handled with a phone call. Interesting that the waters were too bad for a kayak but not bad enough for a swim to shore?

Why couldn't he pull it to shore, while he was swimming?
