Improving the Rt. 28 interchange in Loudoun, as well as widening Rt. 7 over the Dulles Toll Road in Fairfax, made it to the governor’s list of transportation priorities.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) announced Wednesday how the state would allocate $13.1 billion to improve road, bridge, rail, transit, bicycle/pedestrian paths and other transportation projects over the next six years. Much of the money comes from the landmark transportation bill passed in the General Assembly a year ago.
Along with improvements to the Rt. 28 interchange and widening a portion of Rt. 7, the project highlights for Northern Virginia include:
· developing I-66 improvements, extending the use of shoulders on I-495 and tie-in to the Express Lanes;
· funding improvements in the Metro 2025 program, including upgrades for eight-car trains along the Metrorail Orange line;
· and expanding Virginia Railway Express platforms and adding the VRE Potomac Shores station in Prince William County.
The projects were prioritized based on need, as spelled out in legislation HB2 that passed the General Assembly this session and recently signed into law. The bill requires that transportation funding be spent on projects that are expected to relieve the most congestion relative to their cost.
“This prioritizes the projects based on pure data—it’s a scientific method for deciding what projects are funded,” said Del. David Ramadan (R-87), a chief co-patron of HB2. “It takes away all the cronyism and really just looks at where the needs are.”
Of the list of projects that made it to the top of the priority list, Ramadan said, “they are right on.”
The timeline for when the improvements will be made has not been released, but Ramadan expects details to be announced soon.
