Best coleslaw within 40 miles of Fairfax?

I just had coleslaw from the Roy Rogers down route 1 near Mt Vernon. That slaw was the best ever!! I am going to buy more tomorrow! I hear that Red Hot & blue has good slaw. How about some opinions about coleslaw hot spots around here?

35 miles from the FX Prince William boarder on I-95 on Rt 1 in Fredricksburg. Allman's BBQ over now 50 years cole slaw with a southern boiled sauce sweet and creamy. Very few places make a boiled coleslaw sauce.Several sizes to go.
A lady worked there 50 years and she made the sauce, she might still be there she was about 3 years back.

I-95 to Rt 3 east to Rt 1 North about 1 mile up on left. Good BBQ and ribs also.

And on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTAHvRtzVv8 Easy to make this one. Not a boiled sauce.

Fishmarket Old Town has cole slaw thats very good. Its got some green pepper in it and the white pepper too.

Lots of places use commercial made stuff and that type slaw is no good..

Cole slaw and baked beans are a perfect match

+1

It beats out KFC and Popeyes.

Coleslaw is one of those things that for some reason only greasy fast food restaurants are able to make correctly. I've never had decent coleslaw at a sitdown restaurant or BBQ joint.

Coleslaw is a side dish. It is typically served where main courses that go well with coleslaw are served. Dogs and burgers, salty cold cuts, sausages and wursts, deep-fried foods, and many types of seafood, These are menu items typically found in "greasy spoon" places. Such as my house and quite possibly yours.

Meanwhile, anybody can make coleslaw correctly. The basics of it are just too simple to mess up. Shred or slice some nice green cabbage and maybe some carrots if you like. Toss those in a pre-made sauce, let it chill for an hour or so, then eat. There are typically two types of sauce. Sweet-and-sour vinaigrette, and the more common creamy, which is almost always some blend of mayonnaise, milk/buttermilk, sugar, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and some sort of vinegar. That's the easy part, but it may not be enough. It's going to be what else you do that lets the slaw sink or swim.

Many people add Dijon mustard or celery salt/seeds. Some add raisins or pineapple. Personally, I would never, but I do add a touch of finely diced gherkins and a mere dash of diced sweet onion (e.g., vidalia). I also use heavy cream instead of milk and man-up with some serious splats of white horseradish. Crunch, crunch, yum!

Prep by the way should include sweating the cabbage or it will end up leaking all over your slaw. Slice, shred, or dice the cabbage as you will, then put it in a colander with a tablespoon of salt and a tablespoon of sugar. Toss that all around, then let it sit and drain for 5-6 minutes. Rinse well with cold water and pat dry between layers of linen or paper toweling. Add to the sauce, and stick it in the fridge for an hour or so. Good to go. The sweating will release about 15% of the water in the cabbage -- enough to keep it from turning to mush without draining away all the flavor.

Huge coleslaw fan. Believe it or not, Safeway deli coleslaw is awesome (the stuff that gets scooped out for you behind the glass, not the prepackaged stuff, that shit sucks).

Give it a try. I've been pleased at several Safeways, they must have a standardized recipe.

Probably Chick-fil-A for prepared, but it is really easy to make at home. Thanks for the suggestion to sweat the cabbage first...the extra liquid is a bane to my typical reciple which uses just a touch of mayo, red wine vinegar, dijon mustard, extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, and a bit sugar to cut the acid.

As a guy who has worked in a lot of restaurants, the cole slaw you rave about is made in some huge facilities up in Secaucus, New Jersey, or some other such similar places. It comes in white one gallon plastic tubs, and the same truck that brought it to the place I was working stopped at like twenty other places. If you're eating white, creamy cole slaw, that's where it's from.

It's very rare to get cole slaw different from that. Practically no restaurant actually makes their own cole slaw.

I have tired and failed so far. The stuff is like crack if it is done right. Great on pulled pork, hot dogs, burger or even plain.

I believe it has Apple Cider Vinegar
Ground black pepper
Sugar
Very finely chopped tomatoes, possibly canned stewed tomatoes with no skin and drained??

I have read a number of recipes that say use ketchup, but this is not right or there is VERY little ketchup in the slaw.

I think you need to let it sit in the fridge overnight for best results as well?

From the urban dictionary,

TOP DEFINITION
The coleslaw
The act of a homosexual banging a man in the butt with a carrot and simultaneously jacking off and ejaculating into his butthole at the same time, creating a coleslaw-like mix.

Sysco sells coleslaw dressing in big cans but not the actual coleslaw. The coleslaw comes from the produce supplier and it is shipped in bags not buckets you ignorant fuck.
