Door-to-Door Rabies and Dog License Check

I just heard on WTOP that FCPD will be going door-to-door verifying that pets have current rabies vaccinations and licenses. The press release has more...it would be interesting to know which neighborhoods they will be visiting.

I don't see anything about going door-to-door. FCPD had better tread lightly...

It's great to know the cops don't have anything better to do. I know when I head out the door each morning, the first thing I worry about is getting attacked by a rabid dog.

I'm glad they're staying on top of this.

I don't disagree about this being questionable use of resources, but there is a real threat if your dog or cat gets bitten by a rabid squirrel, raccoon or fox. I would just hope that they use discretion with regard to fines on the spot...$250 seems pretty steep.

I have to wonder, how will they approach people? That press release is vague to the point of being very questionable. If they knock on my door and ask to see my dog's license, or my cat's papers, what is to stop me from telling them the animal is dead and slamming the door? Do you think a judge wouldn't laugh at anyone trying to get a warrant to look for someone's pet?

Oh I'm sure it's a serious situation if your pet gets rabies. But with all the stories I hear about heroin dealers at Westfield, gangs roaming Springfield, drug dealers getting stabbed, people getting attacked on trails, recurring bank robberies in Reston, it makes me wonder how this rabies thing is suddenly a priority.

You'd actually answer your door?

Is that sign on your door a permanent fixture, or was that a one-time thing?

One-time thing. My HOA would take it down without even asking the minute they saw it in daylight.

I was actually dumb enough to knock anyway.

Fixed. After more than two decades of knocking before I go into someone's house/room/office, it was hard to resist the urge.

Animal Control operates under the police department, which is why the police department put out the press release. I suspect it will be animal control officers and not actual police officers involved with this. The press release says they will be concentrating on areas which had rabies outbreaks last year. I highly doubt they will be in most neighborhoods. It sounds like more of an education and awareness thing rather than an enforcement thing to me.

No, I would let my dog answer it.

It would hard to simply ignore the door since my dogs, all four of them, would be going ballistic once they heard a knock or the bell. I was wondering, however, what your rights are in this situation and whether you can simply refuse to answer their questions. How forceful would they be?

That is more sensible, I didn't realize the dogcatchers were under FCPD.

I'm sure you could refuse to answer their questions, although if they ask for your ID it's probably a good idea to comply.

That was essentially my question, but my guess is that they will have a report with dogs & cats licensed at each property. I know that only two of my dogs have a current license, but all of them are up to date on their shots.

Worst case if they stopped by and asked about the other dogs, just say that you're dog-sitting for an out of state friend.....

I know this is off topic, but how come you have to have a license to have a dog, but not a kid?

I don't think you're obligated to answer - hell, maybe you're in the bathroom, but if they left some kind of note/form letter perhaps you would have to oblige. But, none of this makes sense because you have to renew your dog's license every year and you have to have proof of vaccinations - so they would be able to track whether you weren't complying just by the records on file - seems to me they could simply send notices out to those who aren't renewing the pet's license -

good point. Don't get divorced in Loudoun County w/kids - they make you take a parenting class before they will grant the divorce - crazy - didn't make you take a class to have a kid -

Because the douchebags who tell you how to treat your dog are also qualified to tell you you're qualified to be a parent, right?

This has nothing to do with rabies and everything to do with revenue collection.
Have you checked your real estate assesssment yet?

I work at the Gubamint Center and noticed that for the last month that the lines for fines has been steadily busy. In teh last few years its always been the same, not much except for October when the county sticker was due.

FF County needs money, badly, so the are stepping up enforcement every way they can to get some revenue coming in. This is part of that. Get used to it.

Damn... I'm stumped. At first I was thinking..."Well, animals can bite people and spread disease".

Then I thought about Michael Kennedy ( http://images.usatoday.com/news/_photos/2006/05/09/mug-va-shooting.jpg ).

Does make one wonder....
