Thai Cafe. It's in a bad location (on the outer edge of the Springfield Mall property. But it's been there a really long time. More than 10 yrs. The owners, Penny & Tony have done a great job of maintaining the quality & flavor of the food.

I second Panisa in Burke and Thai Cafe in Springfield. Both are excellent.

A half-step down from those two, but still good, is Elephant Jumps in Falls Church.

A good rule of thumb for local Thai restaurants: If the decor is shiny, heavy on shellac and neon and space age atmosphere, and the diners are mostly caucasians, pass on it.

The best Thai in the area for years was TK Thai in Springfield. Diners were primarily Fresh off the Boat Thais, with very few yuppies ever venturing in. I still mourn its closing.

There's at least one similar place still open that caters to actual Thai families and other SE Asians, but I'm not going to bring them to your attention.

Thai Luang in Herndon is really good, their Sweet Basil Duck is awesome. There is also Duangrats in Falls Church, not sure if they are still in business. The lower part was a dining area, upstairs is where they would do Thai dancing performances. I miss Thailand, lived there for 4 years before coming back stateside with my family. Lived on Soi 53, attended ISB.

We are big fans of Courtside Thai in Fairfax City. Delicious food and the family that owns the place is really great.

Disagree. Pasara's food is far too sweet, even when you ask for it tham thai thai noi khrap ("homestyle," or like the chef would make for a Thai person).

A Greek-American cooking Thai food for $45 and there is a 2 hour wait. This just proves how fucking bad food establishments are in this area.

When I go out to eat, I do miss places I used to live near like Boston and Cleveland. Both of those places have great cultural food without all the pretense and poor quality of this region.

This place is better than most and the owner and staff are super nice but they need a bigger space.

It's clearly Thai Basil in Chantilly, their Pad Kaprow is wonderful, and the owner did defeat Bobby Flay. It's gone down a bit over the last few years if you go for dinner during the week and the owner is not cooking, but normally its spectacular.

A great second best though is Thai Thai on Lee HWY in Arlington, their whole fish basil is unreal.

most of the places listed in this thread are bullshit and you may as well just eat a bowl of salted sugar water.

be sure to add a single red pepper seed to the bowl to make it equivalent of the yuppie-thai restaurants' bullshit "3 pepper" or even more insultingly racist, "Thai hot," ratings.

Is the owner of Thai Basil Greek-American too? Cause Whenever I think of ethnic Thai food, Bobby fucking Flay is the first person that comes to mind. Errrr.

Love Thai food but cannot recommend Thai Luang.

The one time we ate there and the chicken dish that was served literally smelled like shit ...... and they told us that was the way it was supposed to smell. Never had any kind of meat at any Thai restaurant before or since that smelled that foul.

It must have been spoiled chicken which they must have gussied up with spices. They offered to replace it but we'd waited 30 minutes to be served and were not about to wait for another half hour.

Glad to see a couple of places I have not tried on the list. I agree with the Thai Basil recommendation out on Route 50. A little further afield the Rabieng/Duangrat's combo in Falls Church and Thai X'ing in DC are worth checking out.

Go back to Boston or Cleveland, shithead. No one forced you to fuck up those cities and then migrate here to repeat the same dumbass mistakes.

Herndon: Thai Tada is great, always packed when I go there for lunch. (http://www.thaitadarestaurant.com/index.php?p=1_3_Menu)
