The history of moshing (most pit dancing)

How come a lot people say it started in the DC punk scene but there was clearly moshing in the documentary “The decline of western civilization) which was filmed in LA in ‘79 and ‘80?

Not sure that it actually started here but back in the 90s hardcore and punk shows were everywhere...from places like Black Cat to local churches. Any band that had a tape release could book shows at a majority of venues. Moshing and slam dancing were pretty common and record stores would regularly open themselves up for weekend shows. Most of the venues were safe spaces to enjoy local music but to also dissuade violence.
