I have been hearing lots of negative things about the Amphora in Vienna.
I used to eat there years ago and it was very good.
So what happened between then and now?

I went in there and asked for sausage gravy and the waitress didn't know what that was.

Nothing has happened. But you could always go eat at the 29 Diner if you were concerned at all.

Are people who eat out just more snobbish and picky than they used to be?

More a case I'd say of some of the dimbulbs who post here being the same useless jerks that they've always been.

Some of the people I have heard the negative comments from are elderly people who have nothing to gain by saying they were disappointed with their meal at the Amphora.

Amphora is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. We go there a few times a month. Never had anything but good experiences. They even catered my kids christening party.

I've been going to amphora for several decades and have found it to be consistently good.
There are few 24 hour restaurants in this area and, like any restaurant it can have its ups and downs.
I go about twice a month with a group, but even on my own I find their breakfast to be terrific even in the evening or night.
Fresh bakery bread made at their shop across the street and very good coffee. Try it out.

Brian W. Schoeneman is a veteran political professional, public official, attorney and Republican party activist.

Over the years, Brian has held many titles— college administrator, lobbyist, trade association executive, Bush Administration official, blogger, small business owner, attorney, public official —but there are three that he is most proud of: father, husband and Virginian.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in York, Pennsylvania, Brian came to the DC metropolitan area to attend The George Washington University, where he earned two degrees. But it wasn’t until he moved to Fairfax County in 2007 that he knew he’d found his home—and that’s where he settled down, got married and started his family.

I would like to know where Amphora looks for their hired help. Every one of their servers, EVERY ONE, is from some former Soviet Republic in Central Asia.

I also have eaten at Amphora for years and always had a good meal. But my last visit was disappointing. The spaghetti carbonara wasn't nearly as flavorful as in the past and had too many onions in it. I thought it was a fluke since any place can have an off day. But maybe not.

I will go there and eat next week and then let you all know how the food was.

Tell them to grow up and order something else. There are onlky like 200 things on the menu. By the way, you might try acting like a grownup as well.

The food and service is as good as it has ever been. What has changed is Yelp - Pricks that whine about anything.

Let them sit in there and complain while we cut the tires on their car.

That 3/5 from Yelp is a mistake. And the 3.5/5 from TripAdvisor is not right either. How can so many people be so wrong about a restaurant?

Amphora has always been the more "upscale" late night and breakfast spot out of the Dennys, 29, IHOP, etc crowd. If you're drunk, or just there for a cup of coffee, it's a great place.

There has never been a problem with the food. It's always been a cut above other similar establishments. The issue is with the wait staff. There are some downright creepy, FOB folks working here. There are a couple of older Indian "lurch" type dudes there that just hover and make you uncomfortable. And they're always exceptionally tall, so with the awkward disposition, the height and the white coat...they just stand out. Maybe if they lost the white coats you wouldn't expect as much...

That said, if I were out late and wanted to grab a coffee or something to soak up some alcohol, Amphora would probably be toward the top of my list.
If it were 8am on a Saturday and I was wondering what I was doing for breakfast, I'd probably just stay home.

so I gave this place a try on Saturday - early dinner - and it thought it was great! yes, the interior decor is a throwback to maybe 1978'ish and the waiters in the white coats seem a little old fashioned, but the menu was huge and i have to say that the food was really good. and $31 for dinner for two in this area is pretty amazing as well. SO - thanks for bitching and complaining about this place, because your whining was my winning!

Their food and service is good. If you order something unfamiliar and don't like the taste, it's not really grounds for a low rating.

Amphora has always been subpar. It's "good for a 24-hour joint," which means it won't give you food poisoning, but as actual food goes, it's not very good. Flavorless, badly cooked pabulum.
