It's the time of year to get outside. For one day in May, more than 10,000 commuters will get outside on their way to work.

Friday, May 16, 2014 is Bike to Work Day in the D.C. metro area. It's an annual event that draws support from cycling groups throughout Northern Virginia, D.C. and Maryland.

There will be 79 pit stops in communities throughout the region http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/first-time-rider-info/bike-to-work-day-2014-pit-stops/, offering refreshments, a raffle for bicycles and free T-shirts for participants who register by May 9.

Register for Bike to Work Day 2014. https://org.salsalabs.com/o/451/p/salsa/event/common/public/?event_KEY=81372

For those worried about the right route, experienced bicycle commuters will be leading commuter convoys or you can find a ride buddy.

May 17 is door ding repair day. Most area body shops will offer 75% discounts on damage caused to doors by cyclists running into them.

I'm all for helping the environment and cutting back on gas use/costs, but Jeezus, isn't the traffic going to be backed up for miles?

Just in time, too since we finally got some traffic justice this year with SB97 that requires 3 feet clearance for passing bicycles instead of the former 2 feet.

See http://legiscan.com/VA/bill/SB97/2014

Next year we're going for 6 feet.

This and renaming the Sea of Japan are certain to put Terry McAwful in the history books as one of the most influential governors in the Commonwealth's history. And to to think he was able to accomplish all of this in his very first session.

I hope that you and your bicycle crew will learn to follow the traffic laws this year.

Will Jason Berry, the hardcore cyclist and photographer that got the snow plow driver fired, be participating in this event? I remember he had some anger management issues, something about two separate domestic abuse cases that were pleaded out in exchange for counseling....

It should be ILLEGAL for a bicycle to be on any road where the speed limit is over 35 mph.
