I have been seeing white strips on a lot of roads out in FFX & PW county?? I think this is some of de icer maybe?? What is it anyone know? I have seen a VDOT pick ups drive around with this sprayer in the back and it leaves this white strips all over the road Would love to know whatit is>>

Vee Dot is right. They are trying out a new system of pretreating the roads with a brine solution. I wonder if they will get a chance to see if it works since we haven't had any snow or ice. Seems like if they put it down too soon, the effectiveness would have worn off from rain, road wear, etc by the time it snows.

I thought this thread was cool until I realized it wasn't about the White Stripes...

I was thinking about asking this question the other day when I noticed them going all the way down 123 from the parkway to Chain Bridge. I had seen them going down the on-ramp onto the toll road from 123, and along a few other spots before that. Now I'm seeing them everywhere.

I wouldn't call them "white stripes", what I've seen looks like four darker lines maybe a few inches wide, about 12 to 18 inches apart in the middle of the lane. But maybe I'm just focusing on the darker lines and not seeing it as wider white stips of whatever is being sprayed.

The first time I saw one, I just figured it was the typical trail of liquid garbage dripping from a trash truck or something. But those don't appear all over the place.

I did think maybe it is de-icer, last night, but still wasn't sure if it wasn't just something random. I guess that would make sense considering where I've seen them -- down hills, on on- and off-ramps, and curves in the road.

Interesting -- I saw them driving up I-95last weekend and was trying to figure them out myself. They have to be put down as they are straight up the lanes for 10+ miles... If they've figured out a better way to pre-treat the roads that actually stays on ---- great!

Tonight I finally saw white stripes like the OP described, going up the hill and on the overpass over Rt 7, on 123 (heading towards international drive). They were definitely different from the dark stripes I've seen elsewhere.

I wonder if they are testing out different chemicals/mixtures, or if the white ones have just had salt applied afterwards? They're the same pattern, but the ones I've seen on the off-ramps from the toll road onto 123 and going down towards Chain Bridge were dark.

Interesting - must be a VDOT area-office thing, because while I've seen them in Loudoun, Fairfax and PW, there are none in Fauquier.
