Guns are bad and scary. This commonwealth needs to be more like DC and Maryland. Anacostia and Prince George and Baltimore to be exact. BAN ALL GUNS!

I got harassed by the Fairfax city police for carrying my Taurus .357 on my side. I was also smoking tobacco from a good sized bong which is also perfectly legal. Those city cops are the worst.

Why do you need to go out with a group that open carries? If you carry when you are out running errands or going to lunch... I can see that. But why do you need to do so with others? I don't get it. It's like the only reason you go out is to open carry. What's the point other than to get attention or something. Seems like a waste of time.

Just some other people that have the same beliefs in the 2nd amendment to hang around. Not always having to explain my rights, makes my life easier. My only reason to go out is not to open carry. I conceal about 50% of the time. I just want to know if a group exists in NOVA that I can carry with.

How does this make me an attention whore? How do you know my background? How do you know where I have carried and what I have done in the past? You can't. So sit behind your computer and talk shit, because you lack the common sense and social skills that most people have.

Ban all guns? are you psycho? Your police use firearms. Your military uses firearms. How could you make such an unintelligent comment. Please tell me you didn't actually put thought in what you typed. I feel sorry for you and your offspring. May god have mercy on your soul. So what would this group do together besides walk around open carrying?

If you are looking for a gun rights advocacy group there are plenty of them around. I assume at their meetings they get together and talk about gun rights efforts and support legislative campaigns etc. But that doesn't seem to be what you are looking for right? You just want to go hang out in a public place with stranger who have guns. I am still not getting it.

Does the act of open carrying make you feel like you are doing something more than just walking around?

And if you don't want to be bothered by explaining your rights just conceal carry. Don't make a big deal about it. You can't have it both ways - you go out open carrying for one reason - to get attention. When you get that attention, by being asked why do you have a gun? You are then bothered by having to explain your rights?

Just conceal the damn gun and move on with your life. Stop looking for attention.

I'm not offended by it at all. Not sure the others are either. Just trying to understand why you react the way you do. What in your upbringing caused it. Why you think guns are inherently bad things.

I will very rarely open carry in fairfax for the simple fact that carrying in fairfax is not needed. I will conceal carry when I go to the movies or go for a walk with the gf but that's about it. Now when we visit Dale city, its open carry with an extended mag. Yes overkill, but I hope its a detterent and keeps the honest man honest.

It also increases the chance that someone will approach you from behind, take it and use it against you and others. Open carry doesn't offend me but I've never understood the argument that having it in the open is a deterrent. It's putting a gun in arm's reach of anyone in your general vicinity. And no, just because it's attached to your hip doesn't mean you'd be able to prevent anyone from knowing how your holster works and taking it. Conceal it if you insist on having one in case shit hits the fan.

If it's not completely obvious, you want to hang out with a group of people strictly because they wear guns on their hips. If that's not the case, you'd just join an online forum or a gun rights group that has a purpose as stated above. Your group has no purpose other than to bring attention to yourselves. You want to be seen in public as the guy who carries a gun.

We have the same problem with the assholes that ride street bikes together. They just want to look cool and draw attention to justify their self-image and the money they've sunk into their hobby. Sure, it's legal - but your stirring the pot and making citizens nervous just to prove a point. Fucking A, get over yourselves.

Most of the fat fucks I've seen open carry in this area are out of shape old timers that would drop with one cheap shot to the jaw. What happens when a young, able-bodied felon who can't get ahold of a weapon sees one on your hip and decides to do something crazy just because the opportunity has presented itself? He slugs the old guy in the jaw, knocking him out before he knew what was going on, then has full access to a gun. Open carry is for blowhards who need eyes on them to feel important.

It's like seeing a big fat person in a smart car...utterly laughable.

Ask any open carrier how many times having their gun on their hip has been useful. Then call bullshit if they respond with anything other than "never".

Open Carry has been legal in Virginia since 1607! You don't need a permit to carry open which is a huge plus.
I open carry every day in Fairfax County. I try not to make a display of it, going as far as wearing darker shirts so fewer people will be concerned and I get fewer questions. If advocacy and proselytizing are your goals, then please do us all a favor and dress in a respectable manner. New and seemingly radical ideas are best served in easily-digestible packaging.
Police in this area have noticed my pistol a few times, but none of them cared. I appreciate that.
As for groups of Open Carriers, I can speak highly of opencarry.org. This is their Virginia Forum: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?130-Virginia

Yeah, we get it, but just conceal it. I'm not anti-gun, I'm just anti-douchebag. The chances of an open carry gun being used against you or others is probably higher than the chances of the carrier using it to effectively handle a bad situation.

Can't think of any scenario where open carry is better than concealed, other than letting society know how much of a self-centered tool you are. You're putting a target on your back. Any potential shooter is going to take care of you first if you have a gun on your hip. Not the case if it's concealed.

That's the situation you're all hungry for, right? Protecting everyone like you claim you'd do, when in reality you're probably some poser who dropped 500 bucks at a gun show.

I agree with the guy who posted earlier - most open carriers couldn't win a fist fight with someone younger and stronger. What happens then?

Someone just please provide a good argument for open carry other than the old ass constitution telling you that you can.

NoVa isn't the best place to open carry because of so many ignorant out of towners. Too many foreigners that don't know it's legal, and too many NJ/NY people who are used to it being illegal.

You see it more frequently if you go 50 miles west or south (and not as many dumbass transplants).

I don't have a CCP nor do I oc but I like the fact that I have a
right to do so if I wish. Under the right circumstances I would do
so. No, the cops aren't allowed to harass anyone for oc'ing or they
would be risking a lawsuit. If someone calls 911 and reports someone
walking around with a gun the first thing the dispatcher will ask
is what they're doing with it. Unless they're brandishing or acting
strangely you will be told that it's perfectly legal for them to do
so.

So the 2nd amendment was adopted in the late 1700s. Things have changed. The reason to conceal carry is the .001% chance you'll need to use it to defend yourself. The reason you can open carry is because.....it was decided it was ok in the late 1700s. There is no other good reason.

I can't remember what year it was but until the preemption laws were changed
open carry was against the law in Fairfax County. Before that, municipalities
and counties were writing their own laws. We also had a three day waiting
period for a handgun. That's all changed for the better. We also have a
Shall Issue CCP system as opposed to the old May Issue system. Under the
May issue system, local judges were giving them out as favors for things like
campaign contributions. Oliver North really started the ball rolling when
a local judge refused to renew his permit, nevermind the CIA thought
he was being targeted by Abu Nidal. Thanks Ollie, you're a good man.

Meaning you can't settle arguments with an old fashioned shootout. There are no roaming buffalo to shoot for fun. This is not 'Nam. There are rules.

It's a quote from The Big Lebowski you asshole. "You can't shoot people dead on the street and get away with it anymore" in layman's terms if a little satire is too much for you.

TRUE . I see only a few people open carrying. When there police they seem to have a badge on their belt. A good idea and policy because if something happens they had "displayed" a badge as the law requires and people dont flip out when they see the badge.. Now the badge could just say US Citizen on it anything but police and it would look like a cop badge and be legal and no one would flip out or do something stupid like grabbing the gun.

Saying something smart ass to a person carrying a gun is very stupid. Just follow Texas and give a armed man respect.

Only people who try to draw attention to themselves or are missing something in life parade around with a gun on their belt. What kind of idiot would do that?

I feel like my initial question was misunderstood by most of the people. I just re-read the start of this thread, never once did I ask for your views on open carry.

It amazes me on how many people completely failed to understand what was really asked.

Someone please let me know when society has rubbed all these ignorant fools from our existence.

Yeah, but when the group of singing white people try to rob you, you can sing along with them as long as you are not black.
