Well I will start by saying VDOT is preparing by putting a rolling electronic message board every 5 miles along 66 east saying DC event January 20th expect Delays
I also saw 2 on i-81 heading towards exit 300.

All the hotel parking lots in Centreville, Manassas, Gainesville are FULL!

As of 4PM today, 66 is HOV-2 inside the Beltway. That's pretty ridiculous.

I think only inbound to DC, but who knows.... it's seriously an inconvenience, especially given the fact that it will be in place for days...

Got some goods:

VDOT Youtube Video (I'd rather have some street markings repainted than a youtube vid):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oreLptVudw4

I-66 Official HOV Information, PDF, middle of page 2:
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/News/2009/VA_Prepares_for_Inauguration_Traffic_01-07-09.pdf

I-66, Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Connector Road HOV Schedule
· From 4 p.m. Saturday, January 17, until 3 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, HOV-2 will be in effect eastbound.
· From 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, only buses and authorized vehicles will be allowed to use the eastbound HOV lanes.
· From 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, until 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, HOV-2 will be in effect westbound.

Basically, what they're trying to say is -- Don't go on 66 for the next 7 days :)

I just saw that the bridges were closed down. is that just for today, or is that until after the inauguration?

not that it matters to me. I wouldn't touch DC with a 10 mile pole for at least a week.

I think they should dynamite all the bridges into DC, just to be safe.

There was a bunch of idealistic young zombified douchebags running around near Verizon Center last night. I was ready for a little change too, but the hero worship is pretty hard to stomach.

$150 Million in the time of recession? Looks like the Obama voters could afford the trip and the overpriced lodging just fine..

There are disaster recovery groups setting up shop in government, church, and community centers around the County. I inquired if they were there for a just-in-case emergency scenario. they said they were there for that, but mainly because they're betting alot of people are going to make the pilgrimage to DC, and either not have anywhere to stay, or not have enough money to get home.

so the population of FFXCO may increase a little. there's plenty of foreclosed houses to squat in.

This is near the whitehouse. I think the obama worship service just got out. i saw it on HBO, the mall was packed from the lincoln memorial out past the reflecting pool.

if you click around the street cams there is no regard for cross-walks or cars. they're pwning the place.

I feel sorry for the professional protesters that don't have anything to protest.

Their guy won, so what are they going to do for the next 4 years? They will be like the Maytag repairmen...

i've been to at least one game for every sports team in DC, and the last inauguration...this is incredible.

That's the thing with "activists" you find out who the real "activists" are once they get their point across. give it 6 months, this level of excitement can't keep these levels for long. they should make him the whitehouse spokesman. just making speeches, what he's good at.

Gays are protesting Rick Warren! Bring your loafers to the Inauguration and clap them over your head when Rick Warren speaks! We need to protest this homophobe!

friend called and said he saw an electronic message board on I-81 near Harrisonburg that said something to the effect of: "AVOID I-66 EAST - TAKE ALTERNATE ROUTE TO DC"

so what, are they suppose to go through charolettsville or take 211 through warrenton?

i'm going to open a T shirt stand, my hot item will be one that says "NO -- I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO GET TO DC"

So you had no problem w/ Obama's racist, America hating pastor of 20 years, but when he returns a courtesy to the guy who hosted the "faith forum" it's time to protest?

You ARE a fag

rick warren?! what a jerk, i can't believe Obama picked HIM! of all the pastors in all the country that believe homosexuality is a sin...preposterous!

his church is probably one of the more "tolerant" churches in the country.

he could have picked Fred Phelps. who btw will be at the inaugural parade. with his family, make sure you stop by and say hi.

i just don't get all the whining...of all the minority groups, they are the only ones that made a choice to be who they are (LGBT). everyone else was born that way (blacks, whites, indians, physically disabled, etc)

A friend reported on Monday that an EMB on Arlington Blvd
in Fairfax was saying that the road would be closed Tuesday.

(Don't know exactly where this was or exactly what
the message was. Seems pretty far out! Maybe they
are closing some roads to be used for emergency
evacuation routes or something?)

I just drove by that on-ramp that takes you from 123N onto the Toll Road toward 66. It's being blocked by not 1, not two, but THREE FFX county cops. all just sitting there with their lights on. There were also 2 cops sitting on the other side of 123 with their lights on. That's pretty overkill.

just got off 66 between 28 and 50...hardly any traffic, its weird, lighter than any holiday. its like early on a sunday morning. might get heavier, alot of people don't know that they should have left at 4am.

heard on WTOP that vienna metro was full at 6am, and people are parking anywhere they can including highway off ramps and running to the stations.

i don't blame them, Obama said he'd help pay for our mortgages, bills and gas.

From the Post:

But at the Vienna Metro by 5:20 a.m., the line into the station parking lot was an estimated two miles long

(Holy shit)

Is it safe to assume that that the intersection of Nutley and Lee Highway is a total cluster f**k? If so, I guess that I should plan on going to Micro Center tomorrow.

They were saying that there would be a lot of spillover into neighborhoods just outside the Beltway and around Metro stations.

Washington Post -- Get There:

Posted at 10:12 AM ET, 01/20/2009
Some Turn Around, Head Home

It appears that some people have already had enough.

A steady trickle of people was emerging from the Franconia-Springfield Metro station by mid-morning, fighting the crowds heading in.

Some had already been to the Mall and were fleeing because they had gotten too cold. "We basically froze to death," said Lisa Lewis, 40, of Rochester, N.Y., who was clutching her 4-year-old daughter and shivering as she left the station around 9:45 a.m.

"Even though we come from a cold area," she said, "we didn't realize just how cold it was going to be here."
