What would happen in Fairfax County if a Zombie Apocalypse were to occur?

Serious question...

What would happen in Fairfax County if a Zombie Apocalypse were to occur?

Using The circumstances in Walking Dead as a model.

***Note: We're not disputing that one can or cannot happen. This assumes that one has happened and what would happen after an "Outbreak".

You have to consider as well what type of zombies would be brought about.

Are these super strong zombies that can sprint and jump and climb like in World War Z or I am Legend?

Are they still living like in 28 Days/Weeks Later and can be killed like a normal human (you don't need to make headshots).....

That's a fair question, use the "Walking Dead" zombies as a reference. Fairly mobile but not fast like they were in World War Z.

I'd do my best to get my family out of this highly populated area. We have enough supplies to sit tight for a few weeks, than try to move on after the really bad craziness has hopefully settled down some. Apocalyptic bonus points if my one neighbor gets infected and I get to put one in his dome. Sorry bud, that's what being a dick in the good times gets you. One reason to stay though is that with so many houses around here there's allot of supplies to forage!

I would be worried that leaving the city would mean running into redneck and Spanish gangs in the suburban areas. So if the zombies don't get you, one of those "foraging" gangs surely would.

Your best option would be to hole up to survive the initial wave of madness.

We've seen in plenty of circumstances that this area becomes crippled if any decent sized portion of the population tries to travel at the same time. Any evacuation would be equally ineffective, so you'd have the "Walking Dead" scenario of the people stuck on the highway just listening to the radio. Heck when we had that earthquake, the cell service promptly failed to work.

I work downtown and am pretty much resigned to the fact that in an emergency, I am not getting home. I have the same general plan for that scenario, to find a safe place to wait it out.

Might be worthwhile to seize control of a Costco or BJ's, secure the building, and then setup an area to live (above ground) like they had in "Employee of the month" (Remember that place they had hidden in the pallets?.

Depending on how the "outbreak" occurred, how quickly, and how fast the zombies move/infect others really would help to decide the outcome. At least in the United States there is a large percentage of gun owners to help cull the numbers of zombies. The problem is of course, the zombies would overwhelm that person by sheer numbers no matter how many guns they had (see Mythbusters zombie science).

How many guns are registered in America?
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/03/19/how-many-people-own-guns-in-america-and-is-gun-ownership-actually-declining/

That’s a seemingly obvious question without a straightforward answer. There’s no universal gun registry, and thus not a simple way to pin down the exact number of firearms in the U.S.

There are estimates, however. According to the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey – the leading source of international public information about firearms – the U.S. has the best-armed civilian population in the world, with an estimated 270 million total guns. That’s an average of 89 firearms for every 100 residents — far ahead of Yemen, which comes in second with about 55 firearms for every 100 people, or Switzerland, which is third with 46 guns for every 100 people.

There are certain types of firearms that do require registration in the United States: those subject to the National Firearms Act, including machine guns, shotguns and rifles with barrels shorter than 18 inches, and silencers.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which handles that registration, there were more than 3.1 million National Firearms Act-registered weapons in the U.S. as of March 2012. That includes more than 488,000 machine guns and more than 2 million “destructive devices” such as grenades, which are also classified under the law.

I think the key would be to round up gun owners and form groups to eliminate the zombies. I think that if each of us were to "go it alone", we'd all get picked off by sheer numbers. We'd need food and ammunition, so we'd have to come out of our houses.

The wealthy could escape. I'm sure there are quite a few individuals that own helicopters and private airplanes in Northern Virginia. People that own boats and yachts on the Occoquan and Potomac could go out to the Atlantic and stay close to the coast.

I'd probably stay put, go upstairs and block off the stairwell and wait it out. It would be sheer chaos outside and any attempts to escape would mean your doom. Plus, all the vacated house would be littered with goods, and all the zombies would follow the food into the rural counties. The sheer amount of gun owners and people who watch shows like the walking dead would lead me to believe we might not be fucked after all.

There are farms out there also, with plenty of beef, chicken, vegetables, and well water. The only problem would be securing it and keeping zombies out. One or two wouldn't be a problem, but guns are loud and would attract others. It would need to be a in place off the main roads, and be difficult terrain to get through (thick forest or swamp maybe).

This is particularly frightening from the article...

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2165/when-the-zombies-take-over-how-long-till-the-electricity-fails

About 51% of U.S. and 16% of Canadian electrical generation comes from coal-fired plants. Coal power plants are generally the most problematic in terms of supplying enough fuel to remain in operation, and I could write (and have written) hundreds of pages about them. Mercifully, I'll summarize. At most coal power plants the coal is stored in a huge outdoor pile, where it is typically pushed by bulldozers onto a conveyor and carried to large silos or bunkers at an upper level of the plant, from which it is fed to the burners. When the plant is operating at full output, these bunkers theoretically have a capacity ranging from 8 hours to more than 24 hours. As a practical matter, depending on the amount of coal in the bunkers and the way the plant distributes coal to the burners, the plant may start losing power in as little as 2-4 hours. Whether or not this initial reduction in coal flow shuts the plant down depends on the sophistication of the control systems and the ability of the plant to continue at partial power output without operator intervention.

Coal plants commonly require a lot of operator input to keep running. The controls at coal plants vary tremendously, from systems that are essentially unchanged since the 1950s to modern closed-loop neural network predictive models. In my experience from many months spent in control rooms of power plants around the world, coal plants on average require some sort of operator response for a "critical alarm" every 1-3 hours. Sometimes this is a relatively minor issue, such as a warning to flush the ash systems; sometimes it's more serious, such as excessively high steam temperature or low coal supply. Whatever the case, if the control room were left unattended, I think it's likely that a large number of coal power plants would "trip" (automatically shut down and disconnect from the electrical grid) within 12-18 hours.

About 20% of United States' and 12% of Canadian electrical generation comes from nuclear power plants. Nuclear plants can operate a long time between refuelings - 500 days is a typical quoted figure, and some plants (Brunswick 1 and Pickering 7) are notable for having gone more than 700 days between refuelings. Nuclear plants tend to be more stable in operation than coal plants, and generally have more advanced control systems that can correct for minor problems or routine fluctuations. Two nuclear plant operators I asked about this wondered what I had been drinking, then said that a modern North American nuclear plant would likely run unattended for quite a bit longer than a coal power plant barring a mandated operator response - perhaps as long as a few days to a week. This could vary considerably depending on the plant.

I can easily imagine all the roads being swelled up during an evacuation, cell phones not working (too many users on at once), and local police being overwhelmed. Imagine having to set up and hold a perimeter against an ever growing zombie army.

You can thank the left-wing envirotards for that.

Nuclear plants are more efficient and overall better for the environment. But its almost impossible to build any new ones because of unreasonable regulations and public hysteria fueled by the "green" crowd.

In the Walking dead, they hid near a quarry outside of Atlanta for a while and thought they were safe due to the steep hills. Turns out as the zombies had less “food”, they become hungrier and tried harder to make it up the steep inclines, usually by finding animal trails. In fact, that’s how they find the one walker, eating a dead dear one of the survivors had shot.

5 Scientific Reasons a Zombie Apocalypse Could Actually Happen

We found out recently that if you try to leave a little kid in a graveyard late at night, he'll freak out. Even if you offer to leave him a gun to protect himself. Why? It's because on some instinctual level, all humans know it's just a matter of time until the zombies show up.

Our culture is full of tales of the undead walking the Earth, from our religions to our comic books. But, some sort of zombie apocalypse isn't actually possible, right?

Right?

Guys?

Actually, yes. It's quite possible. Here's five ways it could happen, according to science.

Bigger problem IMO in the sticks is the obligatory roving gangs of nasty dudes who want to take your food. Securing against zombies is one thing. Fighting off armed bandits is another. You'd have to have some numbers, with guns and ammo to keep your farm fortress.

If it were to occur in Fairfax, everyone one race to take pictures and post them on Facebook. Then, they would get in their cars and automatically run them into ditches or just abandon them at major intersections. The would post on Fairfax Underground about the helicopter being overhead and if school is cancelled for the next day.

The zombies would then simply turn around and leave. They discovered no one in this area has a brain, so they would starve.

I checked out this link yesterday and I have to tell you, some of the scenarios they come up with are pretty scary and some almost believable.

these shows about reificating death of poor are a facist wet dream. just let your political enemies die!

there are many shows suggestive of suicide and murder from hollywood recently: who get both COX and Federal money btw

modern hollywood game show: ie, a foreigner walking through guts, having bang go off and guts fly near her head, then she laughs and goes on to enjoying a reward for it

obama killed the netiquiet candidate for FCC

obama isn't going to care. they promote rap, which often is banned for sale to children, and full of white hate, suggestions that gang activity is better than citizenship

that is simply the study of a devil bible. not that i'm religious: but it's illegal just to do

new hollywood film:

arm hispanic females in puberty with weapons

and make running a gang and killing and threatening people

look like it's acceptable and cool as one can possibly make it

------------------------
make the underlying them be: kill white people steal as much as you can your hispanic familia will help you out

The reality is that criminals and gangs would prosper in such an environment. They are used to doing whatever necessary to survive. The pajama boys and liberals would all die early waiting for someone else to rescue and feed them.

An interesting aspect of the Walking Dead is the zombies themselves. Some of them act very strangely (for zombies). In season 2, they found some zombies praying in church in the episode "What Lies Ahead". What's up with that? FREAKY!

Imbiker zombie scares me!!!!

Anyway, I created a product from a manufacturer and have inventory on some pills that threaten zombies by it's smell of the you.It keeps them from attacking you!

Zombies are afraid of fire, lead from rifles, and, lemonade.

I am the only person in the country with this pill formula.

Cross my palms with silver and I might be open to selling you some in a barter trade.

conclusion: Whilst the world panics, I walk pass zombies like ghandi on the battle field.

Living the tao of the pink panther.
