Northern Virginia Collectibles - Stuff I Own
Posted by: 1979 ()
Date: March 06, 2014 11:33AM

I wanted to open a thread for posting of photos of Fairfax/No-VA stuff I actually own. I have just a few items I've collected for their nostalgic or sentimental value that remind me of Northern Virginia days past. I would love to see pics of all of YOUR stuff here too, if you'd care to contribute. I'll start off posting photos of a circa 1981 employee pinback from my first full-time job. The location was Twinbrook Shopping Center at the corner of Braddock Rd. and Twinbrook Rd. It'll be obvious where this item came from.

Speaking of Dart Drug and sister entities, there was a TRAK AUTO tucked into a weird corner adjacent to Old People Buffet in Fair City Mall. I used to get my motor oil there and, after collecting a sufficient number of proofs of purchase, sent them off along with $6.50 for shipping and got this swell item here in return. It's fluky that I managed to accidently hang on to it all these years.

My son graduated from Fairfax High. My understanding is that Paul the Sixth school is where the original Fairfax High building stood. I love little Fairfax historical tidbits. I was a Robinson grad myself.

Another bit of Northern VA swag I got some years back was this frisbee disc. Got it as a give-away item in 1998 at Bob's Big Boy which was located in Falls Church on West Broad Street. That place has since changed hands twice. After Big Boy, it was an Original Pancake House for a short stint and then became a Famous Daves.

I'd say that has to be pre-1986 when WDCA was bought out by TVX.

Make sure you grab some of the artificial turf, as when the school budget finally crashes, it will have to be torn up as they can't maintain it.

Yeah, wasn't there some wealthy benefactor or some such?

I recall hearing tons of consumer griping over Circuit City's... whatever. Customer care or lack thereof, maybe? I forget what people were bitching about. But I used to love Circuit City and in my opinion, it still sucks that they vanished. Got this item at a Circuit City that existed in Springfield on Old Keene Mill.

I remember Waxie Maxies used to be in the malls. Is that an employee pinback? Gawd, when was the last time I went to a mall to buy music? LOL.

Here's some employee swag from my one year with Kinney Shoes at 414 East Maple Avenue in Vienna next door to Wu's Garden Chinese restaurant (still there, amazingly). It's a ruler-calculator, though I've managed over the years to misplace the calc. The old Kinney Shoes building still stands, but it is now two separate suites whose tenants are Leslie's Pool Supplies and Sandy Spring Bank, respectively. I believe even the street name in that area has changed slightly. But yeah, back then, 123 right there in that spot was called E. Maple Ave. So Wu's is still in place and the sem' lem' across the street is still there, but everything else in that immediate area has changed over multiple times since the good ol' 1980's.

since democrats took over fx. co. property crimes have been frequent and more severe.

the Fairfax County Crime Solvers have many unsolved property thefts.

Never tell your "friends" when you will be out of home or town.

Certainly don't give theives a list of what there is to steal at your home.

Wu's Garden closed a couple of months ago, but the building is still there, if that is what you meant. There are rumors that the Kinney Shoes building and Wu's Garden will be torn down and replaced by a mini-strip mall.

I actually didn't know Wu's Garden had closed. Alas, another one from my youth bites the dust. I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Had my very first Kung Pao chicken there. I did think recently that the place looked sorta vacant-ish though. It's been quite a while since I've spent any time there in Vienna. God I love Vienna, but it's changed so much... sigh

So what sort of rumors... I mean, are Kinney Shoes and Wu's buildings being torn down and replaced? How does a rumor work in that context? Have there been announcements posted somewhere or some such? Or other nameable sources? Or do the townsfolk actually murmur about such things? Or...? If such rumors ever get confirmed, I'll need to make my way over there and say a final good-bye to the place before it disappears.

Here's a tool apron I'd gotten around 1990 from a Hechinger store in Woodbridge, which is still Northern VA sort of. Hell, with urban sprawl rampant as it's been since forever, Woodbridge is practically Metro DC nowadays. But yeah, there was a Hechinger right close to Highway 95 whose massive parking lot was used as a commuter pick-up and drop-off point for slug line riders back in the 1990's when I lived out that way. Hechinger's demise was another heart-breaker.
