A man was hit by a car and killed on Rt. 7 in Sterling last night, allegedly as he and another man attempted to flee the scene of a crash nearby.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the man, whose name has not yet been released pending family notification, was a passenger in a car that was involved in a crash at Potomac View Road and Cascades Parkway around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday. Deputies responded to the scene of the first crash, which involved a Pontiac Grand Prix and a Honda Civic. No one was inside the Honda, and deputies saw two sets of footprints leaving the scene.
Deputies searched the area and called in a K-9 unit to assist, but the driver and passenger were not found. The owner of the Honda was located at home and had not been involved in the crash.
Then, just before 6:30 p.m. a second accident was reported in the area of Rt. 7 and Campus Drive, near the Northern Virginia Community College campus. A 41-year-old Ashburn man driving a Honda Pilot in the center westbound lane hit a man who was attempting to cross Rt. 7 from the south. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said multiple witnesses on the scene confirmed that the driver was proceeding on a green light. No charges are expected against him.
During the investigation, the sheriff’s office determined that both the victim and another man were in the travel lanes of Rt. 7 at the time of the accident, and were able to connect the victim to the earlier crash.
The second man fled the scene of the second accident without stopping and was last seen running toward the NVCC campus.
