British Airways plans to inaugurate Airbus A380 service from London’s Heathrow to Washington Dulles International Airport on Sept. 1.

The airline currently has three of the world’s largest passenger aircraft, with nine more on order. The addition of new aircraft to the fleet will enable the airline to expand its A380 route network, which already includes Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Johannesburg.

A380 service from Dulles to Heathrow will run Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

British Airways A380 aircaft are configured to carry a maximum of 469 passengers in four-class configuration. The superjumbos are powered by four Rolls Royce engines.

British Airways carries about 36,000 passengers per month through Dulles, making it the second largest internationally-based carrier (after Lufthansa) at the airport.

Air France was the first carrier to serve Dulles with A380s when it inaugurated service from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport in 2011.

Dulles also will see new service to Madrid, with United Airlines announcing plans for seasonal daily service running from early June to mid-September. The flights will depart Dulles at 5:45 p.m., arriving in Madrid at 7:40 a.m. the next day, using Boeing 757 aircraft.

Over the past year, Dulles has seen growth in international traffic but weakness in domestic passenger totals, as some airlines have shifted service to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
