Even if the Federal Railroad Admin takes over, its only dealing with the safety issues, and hardly any of the operational issues.
Metrorail reliability has deteriorited in the last two weeks since the Stadium Armory substation fire. Even rush hour in the morning from Vienna Metro, no telling when the next rush? hour train will come. In the afternoon, from western Arlington (wasn't quite as crowded if one had any success boarding it in Rosslyn or downtown DC), just made the train one day, next Oragne line train behind 16 minutes later. Friday, waited 22 minutes for a train to Vienna in 4-5pm timeframe, originally projected 16 minutes. With Metrorail unreliability, UberX will get more of my $ for part of my commute.
I do not recommend the DC Metrorail to tourists, once America's subway, nor can even recommend it for rush? hour travel, if going to depend it on it to get to a job or some other destination timely.
Reality is, three year backlog of maintenance and only 2-3 hours a night to do it, broken down trains (95%+ are 10 years old or more), some Metro employees are good but have met many who are not. WMATA Riders Union trying to get leadership to change things around, but not expecting significant changes any time soon.
