Federal Government to Takeover Metro?

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued urgent safety recommendations to the U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday, urging officials to place Metrorail under the watch of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) -- something not done with other subway systems in the U.S.

Metro has faced criticism and rider backlash over the past several years regarding at-times unreliable service, breakdowns and smoke in the tunnels.

Metro won't hire non-blacks. Won't work until they change hiring practices that are by all measures illegal.

Oh great. The only entity on Earth worse at running things than metro has been suggested to takeover metro. Jesus H. Christ. Sell it (or give it away free) to Keolis and let them run it like a business. If they provide a dependable, convenient, and affordable service and the riders will come.

Riding the metro as a kid in the 80s, my dream job then was always to be a metro conductor. Ahhhh...dreams.

Suggestion to the FRA: Firing all the worthless niggers out of the WMATA would be a good place to start.

Probably a needed move by the Feds.

I am always impressed with the helpful workers/staff at Nationals Ball Park, maybe they should take charge.

That's the whole point of the takeover.

$38.00 per hour for cleaning rail cars. How much do janitors usually make?

Do you think that the Feds would actually want to take over Metro?

I really feel safe that the NTSB has deemed Metro safety an emergency situation.

So you are the president's thing then.

The Federal government does have experience running railroads, and they probably realize that taking over Metro would be more like Amtrak than it would be like Conrail.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Feds just deal with heavy rail (freight), not light rail (people)? Two different animals. Sadly, the first thing the Feds would probably do is hire Metro staff.

If you feel threatened on the Metro just take a shotgun and fire two blasts straight up in the air.

Even if the Federal Railroad Admin takes over, its only dealing with the safety issues, and hardly any of the operational issues.

Metrorail reliability has deteriorited in the last two weeks since the Stadium Armory substation fire. Even rush hour in the morning from Vienna Metro, no telling when the next rush? hour train will come. In the afternoon, from western Arlington (wasn't quite as crowded if one had any success boarding it in Rosslyn or downtown DC), just made the train one day, next Oragne line train behind 16 minutes later. Friday, waited 22 minutes for a train to Vienna in 4-5pm timeframe, originally projected 16 minutes. With Metrorail unreliability, UberX will get more of my $ for part of my commute.

I do not recommend the DC Metrorail to tourists, once America's subway, nor can even recommend it for rush? hour travel, if going to depend it on it to get to a job or some other destination timely.

Reality is, three year backlog of maintenance and only 2-3 hours a night to do it, broken down trains (95%+ are 10 years old or more), some Metro employees are good but have met many who are not. WMATA Riders Union trying to get leadership to change things around, but not expecting significant changes any time soon.

It's hard to imagine metro worse than it is, but the feds can do it.
