Ok my Asiental friends, where can I get a good springroll around here? Nothing seems to measure up. Help me find this magical food, not some poor imitation! While we're at it, were's the best Pho?
My favorite tends to be Pho Cyclone in the Merrifield shopping center at the corner of RT 50 and Gallows Road.
Their spring rolls are excellent. They apply 4 quarters of pepperoni under the wrapper and on top of the spring roll. Use a bit of peanut sauce for the dip, if you'd like.
As to the pho, I love their standard pork or beef. Very fragrant broth - a good amount of cilantro, etc. Plus, I like to add a few shots of Sriracha sauce and their pho is perfect for me.
The location isn't huge and tends to fill up during lunch. They might have 10 or 12 tables at the most.
What are you looking for in this perfect spring roll? Most places are basically the same rice paper deep or pan fried with fish sauce.
Not a fan of the rolls in Pho Cyclone by Greevey's but their Pho itself is good.
House of Dynasty is really good place to eat, but it's Chinese, so they don't have good spring rolls that I'm thinking you are looking for.
Legend has it, there was a restaraunt in the fomer Rolling Valley Mall in Springfield/Burke area that was owned by the General Nguyen Ngoc Loan who was the guy from that famous picture executing a Viet Cong guy...that he had the most magical spring rolls on earth. They were lighter, browner, flakier and cut into small bite sized pieces than you get anywhere around here now.

LBSS Class of '89. I've lived here since 1974. That is not a legend. It's all true.

Do you remember the spring rolls, and how magical they were, I have never found one quite like them. They came on a pan cut into about 5 or 6 smaller pieces each. Just the perfect bite size.

These were the best spring rolls. We used to love them. I thought the story about the owner was just a fun rumor.

They really were the greatest spring rolls in the history of the world, I've never found them at any Vietnamese places since, a few have gotten fairly close.
Have you ever seen this kind of roll again? I know one of his children opened a place in Burke briefely but it went out of business.

We used to eat there and those spring rolls were excellent. They also served really good pizza. My dad actually recognized the man from a (now famous) photo that he had seen - that's how we discovered who he was.
WSHS class 90, i remember that place too, the spring rolls were awesome, each piece about the size of a lincoln log, came in a huge tray of like 20 pieces. I have never seen anything like that since either, I wonder why that is.
that place was great, it was in a creepy little mall accross from the Erols. Food was always great. I wonder if one of his family memebers has a place in the area, there are like 1 million Pho places, I'd think they would do good.

I'm intrigued by this suggestion. Can't find any pics of the rolls, but if they have a french spin to the Vietnamese rolls...worth a shot. Thank you for the suggestion.
Yes, that's him, he was a very kind man who owned a great great restaurant with the greatest spring rolls in the history of the world. Now, does anyone know where we can get those spring rolls!
The best pho is pho hot in Annandale. The broth is excellent unlike a lot of the other watered down broths (pho hoa, pho 50, Pho Cong Ly Noodle & Grill).

I used to go to a place in Brooklyn NYC that sounds exactly like what your are talking about, was some old lady from Nam' really dirty viet sandwhich place but the rolls were so small and light. Never seen that again either.
I saw some spring rolls at Whole Foods, they looked pretty good. I'm sure they would be decent to eat. They are 1/2 cooked, you're supposed to put them in the oven and finish them off.

Ironic that stupid "whole" foods only 1/2 cooks the rolls....stupid idiots.

Interesting, I don't see spring rolls on the menu nor any pics of rolls, I've been to Pho Sate right there, which is very good, but not what I'm thinking the OP is looking for.
Bangkrak Thai, in Ashburn. Best spring rolls I've ever had, ask them to bring the spices and hot sauces with them. They make them in-house, unlike many of the places.

That place looks pretty good, must be brand new where it is? It's Thai rolls so not thinking what OP is looking for as his ideal is the flaky Vietnamese rolls...but certainly think I'm gonna check that place out, thanks for the suggestion.
